Hi I am new here
So I have teeth and gum issues for years I have had a partial denture for years but not been able to wear it because I gag like crazy on it I even gag on water after cleaning my teeth and other times
I asked my dentist at the time for advice but he said I don't care if you wear it
so I changed dentist now 5 years later my dentist has told me I am going to need a full extraction and full upper and lower dentures as I have lost a lot of bone structure implants will not work
my question is I am scared to death of my gag reflex with the dentures if I could no wear the partial how will I be able to wear full ones is there anyway to stop me gagging so I can wear the dentures

Hi Kate and welcome to the forum.
I've had full dentures since I was 19. I'm 81 now. I have them replaced about every 20 years. I've had some great ones and some were lousy. The dentist who made my 3rd set gave up on my 4th one. He gave me back my money and said to try someone else. I thought he was doing OK but just needed to do some more adjustments. To me it was normal to get many canka sores with a new set and it just took time to find all the spots and grind them to fit. After the dentist felt we had them right I mentally took possession of them and used my own Dremel tool to fix any more hot spots that showed up. I found over the years that most dentures were too long across the back at the top and caused gagging, so it was normal for me to remove material across the back of the upper, sometimes as much as 1/4 inch. Do it a little at a time so you don't loose the suction that you need to hold them in place but still prevent sores. I also end up with the inside lower left rear being much shorter than than the inside right rear.
I've always been able to make them fit well and able to eat anything. I've never had anyone know I even have dentures unless I decide to surprise them. Good luck and don't be afraid to ask more.

Is it crazy of me to think the lower denture will be more easier with gagging my only dental implants have been my partial and braces as a kid and I had massive issues with both to the point I gave up on the partial
And with my gum issues and bone loss dentist says implants will not be good for me so I am thinking the dentures will be the full kind with palette on the top one which will be my issue
Btw is there a link to gag reflex’s being worse in the mornings mine has been awful this past month what with my worry over all this even cleaning my teeth early forces me to gag and or cough till I wretch

I wouldn't expect the lower to be any problem but I usually have to remove some of the inside rear to prevent creating sores. It's the uppers that they always make too long in the back that gives me gagging problems so I remove enough of that to stop the gagging.
I'm going in to Aspen to get some new ones on May 3rd. My current ones are 22 years old and well worn.
