Hi I got my tonsils out about 6 days ago im 17 years old, everything had seemed to be going fine still in so much pain especially if im late on my medicine im taking ibuprofen which isnt recommened because it thins the blood but its the only thing that will help with the pain without making me sick or throwing up due to allergies of medicines. But im afraid of the whole scab thing, Im not sure what to really expect. They havn't fallen off yet but i noticed they looked like they were getting thicker and i realised there was gunk/food stuck in the pockets of where they removed my tonsils. Disgusting i know! And its very uncomfortable,  i've tried to get the stuff out which i didn't really accomplish and ended up hurting my throat worse and causing a little bleeding and a small blood clot came up. I'm not sure if this is normal. And i cant clear my throat or try to cough it out because they say it can cause bleeding. Which i am completely terrified about! Has anyone had a problem with this or know if its normal for things to get stuck where the tonsils were removed?? Im just so scared and so clueless on what to do to i also had to get my adnoids removed and some kind of surgery in my nose to make more room so i can breath. If anyone has any ideas or knows what i can do it would be really appreciated!! <3

Hello Jessica,

After tonsil removal it's quite common for food to get stuck in your throat, especially around the scabs. That's why it's usually recommended that you stick to so called 'soft diet' which basically means that you're allowed to eat only liquid and soft/ mashed meals - like soup, ice cream, jello... etc. Since it's been 6 days after the procedure, you will slowly start feeling less pain and the scabs will start to fall off - and with them all the nasty stuff that got stuck there in the meantime. It's a tough recovery, but you have to go through it and small improvements like eating only soft food will help you get to the end easier,

Wish you all the best,

Nicole
