I work in the substance abuse field and I can assure you that Tramadol is a synthetic opioid. The addiction and withdrawal is very real. in addition to the withdrawal symptoms you have listed there is insomnia, restless legs, mood swings and diarrhea. I have come across a lot of doctors that tell people that tramadol is non-addictive and that it's not an opioid, they don't know what they are talking about it.

WoW there are many stories out there that i totally relate to, here is my story. about one year ago i had a baby girl i too have taken tramodol for over ten years. she was born fine i did not cut down at all during this pregnancy i was taking about 600mg like 3 times a day at my worst. needless to say she is a beautiful bundle of joy, today i found out i am 8 weeks prego and i do not wanna take these during this pregnancy. i am trying to wein my self but in all honesty that is not working at all. i am considering talking to my dr. about this seeing if there is any other drug i can take to help like suboxone or something? any suggestions out there for what i should do in this situation.

Hi all,
Look, I work in the medical industry and due to my allergies to codeine and morphine I was prescribed tramadol for pain relief after being hit by a car and having a bulging disk and an annular tear at the L5-S1 junction. I was eventually on 8 IR capsules a day and it wasn't really all that great. I had been given tramadol injections too when the pain was not controlled by the capsules.I finally got sick of waiting for compensation to pay for me to go to a back pain management clinic and paid upfront to go. Best move ever!!! I got in contact with a great pain management specialist who got me off the the tramal about a year ago. I did have withdrawal. I vomited. I had tremors. Headaches. Then after about a week that subsided and I felt normal again. He put me on fentanyl patches (which are safe in pregnancy up to 75mcg every 3 days according to my gyny/ob, pain specialist and endocrinologist). Bear in mind the info on fentanyl is from Australia and other countries doctors may have different opinons. Due to severe endometriosis and PCOS, and the fact that my last scan of my remaining ovary (lost one due to endo when I was 24) shows that it has shrunk a lot and that if we want babies we have to start ASAP (I'm 34). I am weaning myself off pregablin (for nerve pain) which causes birth defects, and valium (for back spasms) and will have hopefully finished that in about 2 weeks. if I can I will also cut out the fentanyl I will but that is in fate's hands.
What I really want anyone reading this to know is that addiction to tramadol can happen to even us who have years of training in our chosen field and we trust what the drug companies tell us about the "new non-addictive wonder pain killer". The best thing that you ladies out there with these justfiable concerns is talk to your health professional, and DON'T BE AFRAID TO GET A SECOND OPINION because your dr should be supportive about what what you are going through, not judgemental. And breastfeeding with tramadol in the breast-milk can help stop withdrawal in the infant.
My best to you all.

I'm so glad to stumble upon this site. I was addicted to tramadol for 4 years taking 8-10/50mg per day. I quit during my first pregnancy, which was 2 yrs ago. Then started using them again after my daughter was born. Now I'm 27 wks pregnant and really want to use them again for back pain and energy. I guess this pregnancy is different bc I have a toddler to take care of and I'm always so exhausted. Reading all of the experiences when I want them stops me from using them again bc the withdrawals were awful! Thanks again everyone down shared their experiences.

I am due in about 4 weeks and I am addicted to tramadol. I have cut down over time, and now take about 3 or 4 a day. I have was prescribed ambien to help if I experience insomnia. I, like most of the women in the previous posts, am terrified that my baby girl will go through withdrawals when she is born. I will continue to cut back over the next few weeks and also plan to breastfeed her when she is born to help with withdrawals if she does experience them. When I give birth, I will log on and detail what happens so that next pregnant woman who is searching for answers can at least know what happened to us. I was also told tramadol is non addicting, but realized that I suffered from withdrawal when I stopped taking them. :( Visits with the midwife show a healthy fetus and pregnancy so far. So I will have to cut down as much as my body can tolerate before she is born. Zantac is allowed for hearthburn (a symptom of withdrawal) and immodium for diarrhea is also permitted. I recommended taking these with tylenol, drinking plenty of water, and taking vitamins while coming off of this stuff. And the ambien is a category B medication and is safe in pregnancy if you experience insomnia from it. I really hope this helps. This is my third child, but didn't take anything but the ambien with the first two. I will return next month to update.
