To begin with, I'm actually quite nervous right now because I think I have yeast infection but I don't really know. It really itches around vaginal area and I think the folds are a little swollen or something. This saliva thingy stuff comes out but it's not chunky like cottage cheese. I never gave myself the finger test cause I'm honestly uncomfortable with that.

I'm a virgin and I turned fourteen not too long ago.  I don't really know how to talk to my mom about it though. It's really scaring me and I don't know what exactly to do.

I started doing my own research on treatments to do at home but more than half of the things I can't do. I can try asking my mom for cranberry juice and I can drink a lot more water but everything else I don't know.

Please help! I'm getting really scared and worried.

It does sound like a yeast infection, sorry to say. But honestly, you can get that from many things and its really common. I often get one after being on most antibiotics. It van come from poorly washed underwear, the dye in underwear, not wiping enough or incorrectly afyer going to the bathroom, damp underwear left on all day, poor diet, bodies imbalance of PH, not changing a sanitary pad often enough, etc. Its absolutely nothing your mom should mad at you about. I have found that home remedies DO NOT work. Certain foods can help to keep a yeast infection away. You need antibiotics or it will get worse and can lead to bladder & kidneys (very bad infects & super painful). Please tell your mom. You need an antibiotic & you will better before you know it! Also you should start eating a yogurt with live/active cultures & drinking cranberry juice every day, sick or not. Yogurt fights off nasty stuff & cranberries wont let e-coli (a yeast infection starter) stick to your insides. The Dr will have you pee in a cup & they know in 5 min what it is. I have a daughter that gets these everytime she's done with a certain antibiotic so she asks never to be put on that one. Id hate to think that when she was younger she didnt tell me about this. I wouldnt be surprised if this has something to do with your puberty age too. It happened to me as a teen too & i also was afraid of mom but back then you could see a dr without parents knowing. Thank goodness I went tho. Just tell her.

How do I tell my mother exactly? I'm quite nervous about this and I don't like opening up about it either.
Another quick question: what exactly is antibiotics?

Hi I already replied to you but I wanted to add that the dr can explain to you AND your mom how a yeast infection can happen. And Ive never heard of this finger test...and Im not a spring chicken. But don't go stickin your fingers in there. That wont tell you anything. Keep the area clean (no perfumy stuff) and dry & maybe sprinkle cornstarch (cheap little bx from any store) on yourself. This will help keep it from becoming too irritated than it wants to be & itll make you more comfortable for now. Be sure to wash hands well after. And dont scratch & bother it! See the dr & check in & let us know how you made out!

Thank you very much but how do I explain this my mom? I'm not sure how and this is the first time I'm experiencing all this. How did your daughter tell you about it? Maybe I can try the same way or something.

Hmm. Well antibiotics are a medication that kills off bad bacterias. There are many dif ones for dif issues. Ex: penicillin is one. They usually have a persom on them for 10 days but some newer ones might have a dif amount of days. As far as tellin your mom I dont know her. My mom made me embarrassed to bring up anything like this so i do understand. Is she jist difficult too talk to? Or is she just not well informed about these kinds of things. Cause I'll bet shes had this.

She's finishing college on being a nurse and she's fourty-one. I believe she had experience with this or something.... I'm not sure. I just don't know what to do from here

Actually I informed my daughter of this & other issues of life as she was growing up. And knowing how easy it can be to get this, I always gave her foods that supposedly help your body keep away certain things and told her to let me know if anything ever seemed bothersome or out of the ordinary so she really had no prob approaching me. As for my mom...IF i wouldve told her, & this is going to sound lame but, I wouldve just said 'hey mom..I dont whats going on but...Im really itchy down there (& whatever other symptoms Id have). You prob have a slight fever from time to time as well..or you will. It comes with infections. Do whatever way works for you at that moment.

I think I have a yeast infection. Or maybe hey mom did u change laundry soaps or somethin? Cause I think I've got an reaction to something or a yeast infection cause Im really really irritated. Itll be fine.

Thank you very much.
As a child growing up, I wasn't told about these things and I didn't know what a period was until about a year before I got one.
What are some good examples of foods or drinks I should have each day?
I know water, cranberry juice, and plain yogurt helps a lot, but what else?

I grew up the same way & we had no internet then, just friends that basically never had good advice. Thought parents would have changed by now. Oh well. Anyway, cranberry juice- real stuff, not the blend kind thats actually a bunch of dif juices & sugar with a tiny bit if cranberry. Any kind is better than nothing but purer is always better. Yogurt-plain is best bit blah! I add vanilla extract &/or cinnamon, etc. You can put fruit & sugar yourself. I dont buy ones with sugar for other reasons but as long as your ok with sugar or fruit already in it, its ok. Have mom look for good brands on sale like fage & chobani & well I cant remember the other brand but u can look em up. And yes everyone should drink water. Most ppl dont get enough but think they do. If youve ever heard of kefir, its pretty good. Kinda like a tart yogurt smoothie. Its completely loaded with way more of the good stuff yogurt has. But please read about it 1st cause it bothers some ppls stomachs, at least at 1st or if u drink too much or just arent used to it. These things all can potentially help with female stuff. Their are lots of other foods that are good for so many other things. Get online & check em out. Its actually pretty interesting. Maybe the next time a friend grabs a cheap juice thinking its healthy youll be able to look at the nutrition & ingredient label & tell em if it really is or not and blow their minds! And for vaginal area as rule, keep it clean, keep it dry (basically), like dont wear wet bathing suits all day long, if youre sweating alot-dry it off. Dont use perfumed powders like baby powders or sprays or harsh soaps in tbe shower (dove seems to be good). Change underwear especially if youre 'clammy'. Change pads frequently. And personally I was always taught not to sleep in underwear but to let it air out. Best of luck!

Hey one more idea, although I think the suggestions on how to approach your mom are better, you could also go to your school nurse-if its a female- & let her know whats going on & maybe she can present it to mom. That way you're not feeling as embarrassed & you have a 'buddy' :)
