I knew my husband’s mother had bipolar disorder when I met him. I have noticed her strange acting and I found out that was manic depression. I wasn’t much upset with that fact then. Now we have daughter and I am worry if she could get the same disorder. I would like to know what actually bipolar disorder is and is it hereditary.
bipolar disorder is when people change their moods every 10 minutes this disease is not hereditary and if so it shouldn't matter because she is still your daughter
You should NOT post comments when you are obviously totally ignorant of the discussion topic. I am referring to the person whose comment ends with "still your daughter". This has absolutely nothing to do with henka's post. People should not have to suffer fools when they are trying to get info on a serious illness.

hi im a daughter of a parent who suffered bipolar for over 30 yrs, bipolar is hereditery and is CERTAINLY NOT caused by bad parenting, firstly bipolar as been known by many different names over the yrs and its only been in the past 20 yrs they have realised its caused by a chemical imbalance to the brain .. hence the useage of eeg's,bipolar is a condition you are born with, it could happen to anybody, they Have PROVED its caused by a chemical imbalance ( hormones) how can that possibly be linked to pad parenting???

It seems you may have developed Mulitple Personality Disorder which stemed from BiPolar. This requires good treatment and preventive maintanence.

So it is obvioulsy evident that a traumatic event can cause a chemical inbalance of the brain which then leads to a disorder of some type, Bipolar being one. Getting picked on in school, abusive parents, death, or any other major events that can cause an overwhelming emotional rollercoaster brings on the chemical reaction that the brain cannot recover from. I am no doctor, but I have believe to have a good understanding of the cause.
I am starting to believe my girlfriend is Bipolar of sort. She takes adderall to compensate for her mood swings. Just this morning, I saw the rollercoaster of emotions flowing from her prior to taking her pill. It is necessary to be timely with medication as well as supportive of the person who suffers from this illness.
I believe we are all crazy in our own way. Some are more erratic with their behavior than others. I am slow to anger, but if you get me to that level, HIDE! I guess it really depends on the frequency of mood swings to determine if one suffers from Bipolar or not. Some peoples moods change from hour to hour, day to day, and minute to minute. Does it mean that one is bipolar because their frequency of mood changes are more erractic than others? Maybe their mind processes reality quicker than others allowing them to move from one mood to another quickly.
All in all, life is great. Enjoy every minute of it to the fullest. Life is too short to be unhappy, so do what makes you happy.

Bipolar is not defined by the frequency of the phases so much as the severity of the phases. I am bipolar 1 w/psychotic features and i can go for months on end happy-go-lucky and in the snap of a finger with no reason will become SEVERELY depressed for a day, week, month or even several months. And by severely, i mean borderline suicidal. But by better living through modern chemistry(antipsychotics and mood stabilizers) the episodes can be moderately controlled but not completely. but your last couple of statements about enjoying life i say BRAVO, i couldn't have said it better myself as i have REALLY had to learn to do the past few years and now it's great. Thank you for being one of the understanding, not sympathetic, people out there that is so few and far between. That's all we ask for is patience and understanding, not pity or sympathy.

I see that this post has been around for awhile, but hope that some of you still subscribe to it and may have an answer or opinion. My girlfriend, I believe is bipolar. Her sister has been diagnosed as being bipolar but I'm not sure if their mother has ever been diagnosed bipolar. Interesting enough my girlfriend and her sister are fathered by two different men, so if bipolarism is heretitary then perhaps their mother has some sort of bipolar disorder in herself. The real issue is what constitutes being bipolar? My girlfriend can be happy go lucky for days or weeks and then at a blink of an eye her mood can change to being very odd. What I mean is she is one that is unapologetic for any of her actions, how she says things or how she might make someone feel. She discusses nothing after the fact and if yoiu press it, it's always my problem and she has done nothing wrong. She hates to be told what to do or how to do something, but is always the first to tell me what to do and how to do it. The most concerning is the out of the blue switch in mood, when a simple question is asked or she doesn't like how I said something and then she goes balistic. Some of these traits may be something other than being bipolar but, she will never talk about anything. I have many examples I could write about but would like some opinions before I confront her and try to have a discussion about it with her....cause I know it wont be a very pleasant conversation.....
