Hello, folks. My friend has some problems with herpes zoster. He has been suffering from it for years. I have recently heard that herpes zoster is in fact recidive of varicella. I wonder whether this is true. Can anyone provide me such information? I would really appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

Hi, there. You have heard well. Herpes zoster is indeed a relapse or recidive of varicella. It is caused by virus called varicella zoster virus (VZV). When the first encounter with the virus happens, there are varicella symptoms. This usually happens in childhood. VZV cannot be eliminated from organism, but it establishes latency in one of the ganglia. In some people, when immune system is impaired, VZV activates. Now, there are symptoms of herpes zoster. I hope this helps. Bye!
