Hi, folks. My good friend has just delivered a baby, but it seems that he got an infection with Listeria monocytogenes. I have heard about this infection before, but I don’t know much about it. I would like to know how neonatal listeriosis is manifested. I will appreciate all your replies.

Hi, there. Listeriosis in infants can be a common thing. Neonatal listeriosis is usually acquired through placenta or during after partunition. One of the manifestations is granulomatosis infantisepticum. It is characterized with granulomatous dissemination in various organs. Those would be: liver, lungs, brain, lymphatic tissue, skin, adrenal glands, etc. Lung infection manifests with respiratory distress and shock. It has a fulminant course. I hope your friend’s baby will be all right. Bye!

Sometimes this disease can manifest as meningitis or sepsis. I hope your friend’s kid condition is not so serious. What does this kid’s doctor say? Good luck with all! Bye!

Hello, folks. Listeriosis is indeed serious when it comes to infants. That is why the treatment should be aggressive. Ampicillin is antibiotic of choice. Aminoglycoside is also recommended as additional antibiotic. The whole treatment must be provided in hospital. Your friend must be patient. Sometimes, this treatment lasts for few weeks. I hope everything will be all right. Bye!
