Whether it's safe to mix antibiotics with alcohol depends on the antibiotic you are using, since they are not all the same.

If you're on metronidazole or tinidazole, you really cannot drink any alcohol, because it can cause all sorts of side effects, from shortness of breath to vomiting and heart palpitations. Doxycycline and alcohol can lead to liver problems. In some situations, having a glass of wine or something while on antibiotics is fine, however. The rule is always to ask your prescribing doctor.

In general, when you are not feeling well or are fighting an infection, it is just better to lay off the booze, though.
