The first thing that happens with a CSF leak is a horrid headache, not eye sight. I know because I've had 3 leaks. Every time a headache that wouldn't go away was our first indication. The only time my eye sight was affected was on the 3rd leak. I lost my sight for 30 minutes.

I had a spinal puncture 5 years ago for possible ms and I already had sciatica with rare flare up. After the spinal puncture I have had about a year and a half where I could not even get off the couch and could not even sit up long enough to go out to dinner and set through a meal. The pain has gradually lessened in the last five years but has been a almost daily problem. I have found that the best pain killers for it is to take 1 800mg ibuprofen and one lower dose Tylenol at the same time. I took percocet for a while and all it really did was drug me up. And I had some luck with lidocaine patches until my insurance refused to pay for them anymore. I have another MS test scheduled Nov 18 and I hope they can make a diagnosis without a spinal tap. Unless they are willing to take some form of long term plan to address my sciatica (which by the way is killing as I write this) or give me some sort of long term pain meds I do not think I am going to allow it to be done again.

I had a spinal tap done almost 3 weeks ago and since then I've been having lower back pain but it's more in my left leg and hip. I use to take 10 to 15 mile bike rides everyday and now I can barely walk 20 to 30 yards without my left hip and leg feeling like it's on fire, like I ran a 100 mile marathon with no training.

Hi I had this procedure done nearly 7 years ago, and I now suffer constant lower back pain, leg and groin pain.
It has ruined my life! To the point I feel im going insain . No one will admit it was the lumber punture procedure I had, which in its self took far to long! And I was screaming with pain.
I have now spent years on tramadol, far to long! And now have little affect for my pain.
Not enough is explained about lumber puntures, to the patient and the risks involved even death!!
I'm 56 years old, and was once a wealthy company director! I have slowly watched my life go down the pan, and there is little or nothing I can do about it. You can't see pain! You can't see depression!! And no one but yourself knows how you feel.
There are so many grey areas in medicine and patient after care? And lumber puntures are dangerous, and should only be used as a last resort.

Hello. My son had to have a spinal tap the Monday before Thanksgiving last year due to an ER visit where they felt they needed to rule out bacterial meningitis (which turned out negative, thank God). He had immediate pain in his head, back and legs and had to spend 11 days flat on his back at Children's Hospital following the procedure. The neurologist said he had not seen that much fluid loss in his professional experience, and they couldn't even do the blood patch due to the high level of fluid around his spine. It's now 2 months later and he is still suffering. Has headaches and back pain, which after reading this page I realize is a common problem, but he also has been having extreme stomach pain. Initially we linked it to constipation following the trauma, but that doesn't seem to be the cause any more. Has anyone else experienced bad ongoing stomach pain after a spinal tap? He is missing at least one day of school a week now and has to go lay down in the nurse's office daily when it starts to get bad. As a parent I feel so helpless! He was an active, healthy 15 year old kid before this happened! Now he is suffering, withdrawn, anxiety-ridden about school and missing out time with friends. They haven't recommended anything for him other than Tylenol, Alka-Seltzer and gas relief medicine. Does anyone have any advice for us?

I already had sciatica that flared up every few years for short periods of time. I too had no headache from the lumbar puncture and also followed directions to the T. But about 3 days after the spinal puncture I developed what felt like swelling in my lower spine and that began a period of more than 2 years of extreme pain. I was in so much pain I could not sit at my desk at work and had to constantly get up and stretch and I was for about 3 months in so much pain I could not even sit up in a chair to eat. I could not go out to eat because I had endured so much pain waiting for the food that I was too sick to my stomach from pain to eat by the time the food was brought to the table. I am undergoing more tests later this month for MS but I will not permit them to ever again do a spinal puncture. That was my experience. I was in so much pain that even percocet did not help. The only thing that helped even a little bit was lidocaine patches and now must insurance including mine will not cover them. That is my experience with this procedure.

I had this done 4 days ago. I am in pain constantly. My back, hips, and around to the pelvic area. I can barely get dressed. I feel so bad my husband has to do everything for me and our kiddos. And I'm also 8 months pregnant. So this double sucks. I'm just hoping it gets better.

I also have scoliosis. I told him that before he did it but he ignored me. Mines only been 4 days but I'm miserable. Can't barely walk as I'm in so much pain.
