My spouse is 86 yrs old and was hospitalized last Dec with pneumonia and sepsis. She had no history of heart disease and was diagnosed with newly acquired Afib. A doctor came to her rm the next morning apologizing profusely saying “I’m so sorry. This is our fault. We gave you too much IV fluid”. After this we learned of a congestive heart failure diagnosis. She has been unable to walk since she walked into the emergency room. She began declining at home in April and was readmitted with increased shortness of breath and oxygen levels in the low 80’s. They said too much co2 and diagnosed Hypercapnia. Maybe sleep apnea? She was started on a bipap machine but does not do well wearing it at night. She is currently in rehab again. She saw her pulmonologist yesterday who upon seeing her again is thinking everything is more from the fluid and no sleep apnea. Her legs continue to be huge. She was given some IV lasix in the hospital which got rid of quite a bit. She’s back on oral lasix 100 mg a day and 25 mg of spironolactone. Low salt and fluid restricted diet. Is there hope of this getting resolved? Has anyone else had anything like this?
