For a long time ago I have problem with ammonia in the blood. My doctor used to treat it with some drugs, but he wasn’t so satisfied with results. Lactulose is a synthetic sugar used for treatment of constipation. It is broken down into the colon and pulls water out from the body and into the colon. This water is used for softening stools. Beside this use, Lactulose is also used for situation such as yours is, reducing the amount of ammonia in blood of patients with liver disease. Lactulose works by drawing ammonia from the blood into the colon where it is removed from the body. This medicine comes as liquid to be taken by mouth. Usually it is taken once a day for treatment of constipation and three or four times a day for liver disease. Your job is to follow the directions on your prescription label carefully. Before you start to use Lactulose you should tell your doctor if you are allergic to any medication. Side effects can occur but they are not common, such as diarrhea, gas, upset stomach.
