My mother has problems with her left leg. She has severe pains. It is swelled and red. She went to a doctor. By Doppler ultrasound exam of an extremity he had found the thrombus in the larger veins of her left leg. He has told her that leg embolism can occur. What is it and how to treat it?

This thrombus that you have mentioned can travel trough the blood stream. It can interfere with circulation. A resulting embolus can make great damage in main organs like heart or brain. The treatment is made to prevent this or to prevent making of another embolus. Heparin is the drug that is used to deal with this treat. It has to be given by injection so it requires hospitalization. But it does not take long.
