Hi, I'm 30 year old male from Sydney, Australia. I got the roids removed because they were messing with my bowel movements but they weren’t painful.
Hemorrhoidectomy is now 13 day post op.
I have seen a few of these posts so I’ll just copy what I wrote on the others forums because I went to many.
I have to say that if it wasn’t for finding these posts I most surely would have died of pain. I need to thank everyone who posted their experiences, tips, resolutions and nightmares.
I guess I’ll give my experiences because reading other peoples storys was enlightening.
This is something that I definitely did not expect in regards to pain. I’m pretty sure that if governments use Hemorrhoidectomy as a form of torture to get information from spies or something then I’m pretty sure any agent including James Bond would have sold his soul to make the pain stop.
I mean it was bloody ridicules, what the hell is up with the specialists, nurses and doctors not giving you the appropriate information to be prepared for such ordeal?
After coming back from hospital the great anaesthetic that they give is still in action at-least until the next morning, After that it’s a rolla costa.
First 3 days were horrible horrible pain, 4 showers a day with 4 baths just to make the pain go away for a few minutes. Blood after every BM, more throbbing and the reflexes OMG what’s up with those. You half way urinating and then BANG you lock up stopping everything and then pain from that reflect.
4th day was deceiving I thought I was getting better and I stopped the pain killers, BIG MISTAKE!
Day 5,6,7 were still just as bad if not worse especially after passing BM, I mean I couldn’t sleep properly or I wait wake up every hour to go toilet or wake up at 3 or 4 in the morning and have a bath because the pain was too much.
One of the most frustrating things is that you don’t know if you’re getting better or making it worse or you’re not healing? You think you’re getting better then you have a BM and rips something open again, how was I meant to heal?
Day 8,9 were still bad. There was this feeling especially after BM with the throbbing and constant pain, not being able to release gas properly. There was this feeling that little bubbles were coming out of my anus without my consent, it was weird had no idea. I just felt like ripping my A-Hole out.
By 10 I decided that if I was getting better the next day I would go GP and if still nothing I would go hospital but thank God by Day 11 I was feeling half normal. I gave it two more days until I knew for sure that this was a FOR SURE thing.
In saying that I am now much better, I don’t feel like passing out when going to bathroom and the 5 hour throbbing after BM is gone.
The things that helped me get through this are.
Endone Pain Killers 1 every 6 hours.
Nurofen (Anti Inflammatory) 2 every 6 hours
Panadole (attacks the pain the brain) 2 every 6 hours
MAKE SURE YOU STOOL SOFTNER not the laxative ones unless you need it the one I used was Coloxyl 50
Important to get Anti-Biotics
Xylocain 2% (lignocaine) was what I used first but wasn’t too affective
Then jumped to Xyloproct Oinments 15% (lignocaine) highly recommend
A-lot of Salt bath A-LOT! Epsom salt if possible otherwise regular but not highly recommended.
So there is light in the end of the tunnel, obviously everyone is different but for me it took about 12 days to feel like a normal human being. I would say after 10 if you’re still bad go to the damn hospital because there is something wrong.
HANG IN THERE GUYS!!! There is life after this. Good luck everyone.

Hi!
I had my operation 4 weeks ago. I am a bit paranoid because I still experience bleeding after BM. Not everyday, but when only when I eat a lot and needs some time to empty my intestine. It doesn't hurt but I'm worried that the blood is there. Is it still normal?

Brian,
I'm 43 year old male, had my internal rhoids removed 7.5 weeks ago...i have my BM every morning, twice a day sometimes...soft. However, i still get the burning sensation, lasts for hours (most of the day), feels raw if you will...also, still have the clear/yellow drainage...obviously not as much as before...I've read complete healing takes 6 to 8 weeks...I certainly don't feel healing is around the corner. Should I be concerened?? is this normal?? if the drainage & discomfort do not stop, what should I do??

Hi. Reading your posts gave me the courage to do finally the surgery. I had it 2 days ago. Hemorrhoidectomy (Park's method). My surgeon was amazed during the surgery. He said after the general anesthesia in the operation table my hemorrhoids came out from the anus and they were so many. He was so surprised so he took a photo of them from his iPhone and showed it to me post surgery. He could not believe how I was able to withstand all that pain for so many years. Things got really out of hand a few weeks before the surgery. I was bleeding all over the place.
The first day after the surgery was OK. I was under heavy medication and I could not feel a thing but during the night pain came back and I did not even sleep for a second. A doctor during the night gave me 2times painkillers and nothing changed. The pain was extraordinary.
Morning came, nurses called my surgeon and he asked them to use a different pain killer. I do not know what it was but believe me I was in HELL and came back to PARADISE with that medicine. Surgeon said that for some reason the other painkillers did not have any effect on me. For now on we will use that one he said. After that, the next 2days in the clinic were so pleasant. I could eat and walk around with very little pain. The 3rd day I was discharged and now I am back home.
Doctor gave me Arrestor as a painkiller and 2 other pills I think 1 of them is to relax the veins (Doxiom) and the other one is an antibiotic. Also prescribed an antiseptic to clean my anus after bowl movement, a cream to put inside the anus and another cream for outside the anus.
I had my first bowl movement when I was discharged. I read other posts that people almost fainted or fainted during the first bowel movement. Mine was not like that. I felt the pain but it was not so much.
I believe that I will fully recover the next 2 weeks. Doctor said to visit him on again Tuesday.

Thanks for your post. I am 6 weeks post my hemorrhoidectomy. I am still bleeding with stools and unable to go to work as yet. If I travel around a little, the next day the quantity of blood in mtool increases. Some days back my doc told me that I should have healed by now and wondered why I was recovering 'slowly'. But after reading your post I feel relieved that the slow healing may be more common than I thought it was.
I am using Anovate ointment with the nozzle for application. I am still doing sitz bath twice a day. Hope to get back to my 'normal' life soon. Wish all the best to everyone recovering from this surgery.

I wish they wouldn't give you codeine type pain killers. They actually constipate you which is more pain on top of the excrutiating pain you're already in.
Sits baths and lots of them. Any other type of pain killer than opiate based (why do they do that?). Liquid, veggie diet - though you'll do solids anyway. Sleep (arrange pillows to relieve pressure on that end of things) and lots of patience. Hope you feel better soon.
PS In the weeks and months to follow, if you feel you're having a spasm and you're going to give birth to a bowling ball call the Doc as you might be ripping your wounds as I did. Can't be too careful. Ok now but it's not as clean a scar as it might have been.

I am a 33 yr old female from India. I've had hemorrhoids for around 11-12 years. I tried natural methods and alternative medicines in this time. Some months back, the hemorrhoids started prolapsing from the rectum. I could not stand for more than 10 minutes without them prolapsing. They would prolapse if I ate anything that created gas in the stomach. I saw a doctor and she said that I should go in for surgery or else soon I may have what are closed Thrombosed Hemorrhoids.
So, I had the surgery done and today is exactly 6 weeks post op. The night before the surgery, I was given strong laxatives and stool softeners. For the surgery, I was given a spinal anesthesia. Three internal roids were removed through the traditional hemorrhoidectomy. Mine were big so the doc did not go in for stapling. I was stitched up after the op.
The day after the surgery I felt as if an explosion had taken place at my anus. I could feel something protruding out and was absolutely unable to sit while the nurse kept asking me to try to sit. I went to urinate but could not! After some time the urine came out very slowly. It took a while for me to empty myself. Later the doc came to see me and said that a gauge was stuffed in the anus and that’s why I felt like that.
My first BM was on second day of surgery. It was painless but I could not control myself. The stools were out before I could reach the toilet seat. It happened due to the strong laxatives I was given. This continued for 3-4 days.
Also on the second day, I started vomiting. I was given a warm soup in the morning. Within a few minutes I threw up. I then drank some water and threw up again. After some time I was given some fruit but I kept vomiting. Then I suddenly broke into sweat and appeared as if I had taken a bath. Finally a nurse came to me and explained that an antibiotic must have reacted causing the vomiting. She took my BP and sure enough, it showed a sudden drop. This had caused the sweat. I was given a sedative and some medicine intravenously. When I woke up in the evening, I felt better.
Also on the second day I developed a strong throbbing headache. It was so bad that I forgot about the pain of the surgery. I was already on pain killers but the headache would not go away. The doc said that in some cases of spiral anesthesia, patients develop such headaches. I was then shifted to a plank, where I slept in head-low position, with my feet raised up. After two days in this position, the headache disappeared and has not come back since then.
I was in the hospital for 4 days. After coming home I continued taking stool softeners, laxative, Paracetamol (500 mg twice a day) and antacids. I would take sitz bath 3-4 times a day and then apply some local ointments. I read on this forum that someone found it difficult to sit in the tub for the sitz bath. Well this is what I did – I used to sit with the pressure on one of the hips and not on the tail bone. I used to keep the water lukewarm and add Betadine solution to it.
I went on a high fibre diet. I am a vegetarian and this is what I ate:
Breakfast – a bowl of oats with milk.
Snack at 11 am – three slices of papaya
Lunch – boiled vegetables like gourd, cabbage and spinach with little salt. A piece of brown bread.
Snack at 5 pm – small bowl of cereal with milk
Dinner - boiled vegetables like gourd, cabbage and spinach with little salt.
Water – four to five litres of water in the entire day
No tea or coffee. No biscuits. No spicy food.
After the second week, I felt a thread hanging from the rectum. I went to see the doc and she said that a stitch had come out. She trimmed it and told me not to worry. But the next day I got blood in the stools; the first time since the surgery. This alarmed me because I was in the third week post-op and should have been recovering but I had gone two steps backwards! The third and fourth week went in same fashion. Little pain, some discomfort and bold in stools.
At the end of fourth week my doc asked me to stop the stool softener and continue with a psyllium husk laxative. For the blood in stools she asked me to apply Betadine ointment ‘inside’ the rectum with a gloved finger. When I tried to do that after coming home, my rectum went into a spasm and closed shut. I applied a local anesthetic gel and tried agin but could not get my finger inside. The next day I bought a nozzle from a near by pharmacy and have been applying the medicine inside the rectum with the help of the nozzle.
Now at six weeks post op, I am still bleeding a little with stools. There is some burning after BM. I am able to sit up straight on a soft cushion. I walk a lot in the house and went out for a slow stroll some days back. I have not resumed work as yet because my office is far and requires me to change two buses and take the train. I don’t feel ready for such travel. Like with most people, even my doc told me that I will need 2 weeks to recover completely. It’s been 6 weeks and I still don’t know when I would ‘recover completely’.
I am still taking sitz bath three times a day. With Betadine ointment I am also applying Anovate inside the rectum. The doc has started me on a course on Folic acid and Zinc Sulphate. I am not taking any pain killers now. I am still taking a husk called Softovac but no stool softeners. I eat a high fibre diet and drink 4 litres of water in a day.
Other than the blood in the stools, I am pretty much healed. But the blood is enough to worry me good deal. I am worried that the stitch that had come out too early was a terrible thing. That wound has not healed as yet and bleeds. I am wondering whether I have developed a fissure. Also I have upto 4 BMs in a day. The first three happen in a gap of 20-25 minutes each and then I go in the evening. This is also not letting the wound heal. If anyone can throw some light on this and suggest a way to have just one full BM in a day, I would be grateful.
If anyone is reading this before the surgery, I have a few suggestions. Go in for the surgery only if you are bleeding a good deal from the roids or if they are hampering your daily life in any way. As far as possible try to get on without the surgery with the help of fibre-diets, lot of water intake, etc. Those who have had the surgery, keep your stools soft and keep the area clean. That pretty much takes care of the rest. And those who have recovered from the surgery, please guide the rest of us!

I too thank this website!
i'm a 36 y/o female in Australia and am 6 days post op after haemmroidectomy. Mine weren't actually that bad. I knew I had some internal and 2 external. They didn't play up that much but were annoying when they did, and only bled every few months. i first external one appeared about 10 years ago, but they all got worse after childbirth 3 years ago.
i went to the dr and he suggested just banding the internal ones, but I didn't see the point of only doing half a job so I told him I wanted the external ones removed too. He told me it would be very painful and that I would hate him for a week or 2. But he didn't really elaborate and after stitches from child birth I thought how bad could it be?
well, if I knew it was going to be this bad I wouldn't opted for it and would have just put up with them.
i have no swelling and only minimal bleeding but the pain after bm's is excruciating! I know I have nothing to complain about compared to some others who have shared their stories, but I am finding the pain to be very draining and depressing.
i was only taking half the pain meds prescribed (tramadol) because they make me so out of it which I hate, then on day 3 after the surgery I started feeling extremely nauseous and rang the dr's office who told me to stop the painkillers and just take paracetamol as my pain in general was very low, just the bm's that hurt.
i've been ok with this since then, just managing my pain with baths immediately after a bm, but today I have experienced constant pain all day and was forced to take a tramadol again. it's been about 3 hours and the painkiller isn't really doing much. I don't think I've torn anything. It sounds odd but I think maybe it's the pain of healing. It's a different pain. Or maybe just wishful thinking. Anyone else experienced this just before things start getting better on this hellish ride?
Again, thanks to everyone else who has posted, reading these forums are about the only thing giving me hope at the moment. I will post again with (hopefully) progress.

Been almost 4 years now since. I must say even though it ranked up there with the most severe pain of my life, looking now and then I would do it all over again because of the way things are now for me. It was well worth it to be hemorrhoid free and was a very positive life changing experience.

Yes it's murder. It does go away but you feel like it never will. I lost about 2stone.
Are you having the stool softeners off the Doc? Drink loads of water as well. Can't afford to de-hydrate.
Sitting in the bath (add some salt) for hours helps a bit.
Hope you can find some other pain killers (definitely NOT co-dydramol, dihydrocodeine and the like, they'll constipate you).
Get well soon.

Me again, 36 y/o female from Australia.
now 11 days post surgery. Definitely wishful thinking on that pain meaning I'm getting better. I now have quite a bit of swelling, as opposed to none post surgery, and my BMs are still excruciatingly painful. It's very depressing because I can't see an end in sight. I know it will get better but at this stage I am not seeing any improvement.
still wasn't taking pain killers but now on Celebrex as of this arvo which will hopefully help with the pain and the inflammation.
Yes having stool softeners, so doing about 4BMs a day which is fun, NOT!

It's me again... "I am a 33 yr old female from India. I've had hemorrhoids for around 11-12 years. " I had last written two weeks back when I had completed 6 weeks post-op. I have now completed 8 weeks and here is the latest from me:
I am much better now. I resumed work in the middle of my 7th post-op week. I had mentioned earlier that my office commute involves two buses and a train. I am able to manage the travel although I take good care not to strain myself. I bled a little more with stools on the first two days after joining office. Perhaps it was due to the added activity and stress. But I have been good since then. Now there is no bleeding. I am able to sit for the whole time in office, but I use a soft cushion to sit on. I am still applying the medicines inside with the help of a nozzle.
There is an important thing that I would like to mention here. Last time I had mentioned that I was using 'Anovate' ointment. I discontinued this medicine after around 10 days of application as I had developed an infection on the surrounding skin. This ointment contains a steroid that did not agree with me resulting in rashes, pain and severe itching. So if any of you are given steroids based ointments, please double check with your doctors for possible reactions.
I now have two BMs in the morning and then I am good for the whole day. I am still taking a psyllium husk based laxative but no stool softeners. My experience so far is that this surgery will need you to keep aside a good deal of time for recovery so prepare accordingly. Expect pain, disomfort and some bleeding post-op also but....things will improve with time! Do not worry and do try to stay relaxed. Have some one look after you for the first 1-2 weeks at least. Thank God for my mother who came to live with me and devoted herself to looking after me for a month. All the best to everyone.
