I started taking 50 mcg of Levothyroxine about 3 weeks ago. My stomach is extremely bloated as well. I recently had surgery and the nurse noticed my swollen belly just before the procedure was done and said I needed to check into why it was so big. I had tried Levo about 5 years ago, taking it in the morning, but it made me have severe joint pain and nausea. Couldn't stand it so stopped. After researching when you can take this drug on forums I found a number of people take it about 11pm at night and have no problems or at least they're tolerable. So I am taking it at 11pm and have not been sick with no joint pain like before BUT this huge belly, along with some stomach irritation and hair loss starting, is driving me nuts. I did advise my doctor that I was taking it at night so he is aware. Basically said whatever works. I have not told him about the swollen belly yet and because he is my primary doctor and not a thyroid specialist, I am going to call one and see what she says. I also was taking a natural (bovine) product raw thyroid for 5 years but it suddenly quit working. I would like to try Armour Thyroid as I feel the natural would be much easier for me to handle and hopefully get rid of this most uncomfortable stomach. I also have noticed I have been having headaches every day, another thing I never experienced before taking this drug. Just not a happy camper.

I too have a big belly now. I look totally out of proportion, since I'm a gym rat. No matter how much cardio and dieting I do, my belly sticks out like I'm pregnant. Being a single bachelor approaching 50, I'm seriously considering getting off it. All because I had blood work, I have to look like this now? I felt fine before anyway. Does anybody know what problems I may encounter if I don't take it?

My bloating started after STOPPING Synthroid. I went a month without it and 2 weeks after stopping my stomach began to bloat...mainly after eating. Just a couple crackers or a normal meal. It would swell so fast and so much I looked 6 to 7 months pregnant. Wth? I've started back I synthroid and its still swelling altho not as bad. I'm hoping after a month or so back on the med it will go away today. Idk but it's awful.

I ended up going without my Synthroid for just over a month and omg I was so sick. Never again will I go without it. I had Graves Disease which is HYPERthroid and was given I-131 to destroy my thyroid. I have to take Synthroid/Levothyroxine daily for the rest of my life. Long story short...i ended up going without it for approx 6 weeks. Ten days after is when the nightmare began. My skin became so dry my fingers were splitting open around the nail and cuticle, my face swelled, my eyes stayed so swollen, hair loss, weight gain (quickly), so tired I'd literally doze off standing up, dropping things because of dozing off yet couldn't sleep when I'd lay down, sleep deprivation was awful, dry mouth, i felt and looked like death! My stomach began to swell after eating which in turn caused severe shortness of breath, muscle spasms, so bad I couldn't drive. It was all I could do to put one for in front of the other. A person cannot live without the thyroid gland/hormone. It will eventually lead to thyroid coma and death. Might not happen overnight but it will happen. That's just a fact! My Endocrinologist made that crystal clear to me.

I was on levo for over 30 years until I found out about desicated thyroid and switched and felt much better on it, unfortunately due to manufacturing problems with the natural medication I had to switch back to levo and feel just dreadful with bloating, fatigue and constipation among other problems. It also doesn't help when a new doctor doesn't understand that mcg and mg are totally different when converting medications. No longer sure what to do, stop taking it or what? It is no laughing matter when you can't function on a day to day basis. HELP

I am on the same boat my friend. I am on 125 mg and can't even breath after eating. I am in such an uncomfortable state and was never like this before the med. I have also gained about 18 pounds. I am on the verge of just stopping the med.

Please help!

It definitely causes bloating and gaseousness. It's embarrassing because it makes me look pregnant. I don't have a thyroid and doctors say there is no other drug. What do I do?

Yes. I'm taking 100 mg and I am so bloated and miserable and gassy. I was on 50 mg and wasn't so bloated, then they raised it to 109 mg. I don't know what to do because I don't have a thyroid.
