Hello, good people. A son of my good friends is diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. I know that this disease is genetically determined. I am not sure how much can be done here. What is the life expectancy for the patients with this disease? I would really appreciate if someone could give me more info.

Hi. There isn’t a precise answer to this question. Many factors can influence on the life expectancy. Two most important ones are the severity of the disease and the time of setting the diagnosis. Many people have mild form of CF. In any case, they will live longer. However, there are patients with moderate and severe forms. In 2008, the median average age of survival was about 37. It is even good, since it was 32 in 2000. I hope this will help.
