hi lady lisfranc - just curious how your ceramic implant has been fairing? also - i forgot to ask if you had other parts of your foot fused prior to your recent surgery? it seems a little odd to just have problems on the lateral side of your foot unless your gait is really off if you had a full 5 met lisfranc from my limited knowledge of the foot. i am guess i will need a fusion of the first three mets and then later the ceramic implants for the 4th and 5th - hopefully that would all work!

anyway - i hope you are doing well.

Hey all,

I had ORIF surgery 2 years ago and am currently contemplating having my 1st and 2nd mets fused. I have arthritis in my right foot and am only 26. I hurt my foot when my friend jumped on my and i landed on my foot in a weird way. It hurt like crazy and was extremely swollen. Anyway, i had my ORIF done and i seemed to heal pretty fast. Did the cast, the boot, etc and was doing ok. I had pain in my foot but i ended up just getting used to it. I thought it eventually would go away but it hasn't. I have arthritis now and still cant go on my toes without considerable pain. My foot also gets slightly swollen when i am more active (hiking, walking long distances, etc) for a couple days in a row. My turning point was a couple months ago when i started getting a tingling in my foot. I did some research and i think it might be some type of nerve damage. My foot also has a bump that formed on the top of it due to my bones moving slightly for the last two years. This bump makes it hard to put on shoes and makes wearing them also quite uncomfortable. I figure it might be better to get the fusion so i can hopefully stop this arthritis pain and also stop any further nerve and "deformation" damage that i have done to my foot. Does anyone have any ideas/inputs? Please help me with any info. Thanks!

Hi I am new to here and I figured I would write a little bit about what I am going through. In aug 07 I hurt my foot and found out it was lis franc so I immed. had it repaired, I still was in pain so in jan 08 they removed the hardware. My dr told me that for the rest of my life I would always have pain in my foot so I just kept on dealing with the pain well this past winter it got unbearable in my foot AND IN MY back so I went back to the dr only to find out I immed. went in for fusion march 30 of this year I am still nonweight bearing and og back to see him next thurs. I read some of the posts and I pray that you guys were right and my pain will subside after awhile considering I am only 26 now with 3 young daughters 6,3 and 9 mths this is really hard for me as a mother!!! I cannot play with them the way I would like. I can't run or jump or even walk or stand for long I am curious to know though will I ever be able to wear heels again??? I will keep you guys updated with what goes on from here on out! How I fell : I was at a bar and only had a few beers (barely buzzed) whenever I went to leave I fell here there was a BIG hole in the floor, so my injury isn't even my fault and it kills me inside that I was only 23 when this happened and I have to deal with it the rest of my life!!! If you guys have pics of your foot I owuld like to see as I have pics to share to. Thanks!!!

It was so nice to see that I am not alone...

I had a lisfranc fracture in Jan 07, pins put in... didn't help... so much pain.... turns out I also destroyed my ankle...

My second surgery was to have the pins removed, and they checked my ankle stability at the same time... woke up to find out .. I needed another surgery on my ankle...

Third surgery they stabilized my ankle .. but not enough.

For 15 months I had unbelievable swelling, pain, etc. Right now... I can't even sit for more than a couple of hours without my ankle turning into a grapefruit, and my foot is sooo swollen.. it's unbelievable.

They did an MRI and a Spec CT, the bones are degenerating (which is common I've heard) and the tendons, muscles, etc are all popping off the bones.

I'm scheduled for a a mid foot fusion and they are also rebuilding my ankle with donated tissue at that time.. this will happen Jan 26th 2011.

I know these are 2 things, but does anyone have any idea what time frame I am looking for recovery. I will have 2 surgeons, a general ortho and a foot/ankle specialist. I know I have to stay in the hospital for a couple of days...

What can I expect?

I had a lisfranc injury 9/4/10 and had the fusion at the beginning of October 2010. I just got out my boot a few weeks and I am already running. There is discomfort but atleast I can run and play again :-). I am hoping the discomfort and slight pain will being to lessen as time goes on.

Hi there, I am considering having fusion done. I had screws and ORIF done 10 months ago but since my swelling and pain and disability is frighteningly bad I am thinking that fusion is my only option. How did it go for you? Are you recovering better this time? How is walking going? Are you happy with it? Very curious, scared, and in pain. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Sadmelissa.  PS - I too am 33, healthy and active.

Why don't the Dr's tell us about how terrible this is going to be?  I fractured and dislocated all 5 mets on Aug 3, 2010 when someone pulled in front of me and I slammed on the brakes, the force of the impact up through the brake pedal did the damage! I also had ORIF all hardware (except a couple of SS buttons) have been removed.  I still struggle with severe pain and will not consider joint fusion right now - I am almost 35 and have an 8year old daughter.  I cannot fathon being laid up again as a single mom for that long - plus as it is my right foot, I can't imagine not driving again for 8-12 weeks.  Any "positive" posts about lisfranc without joint fusion????

You're soooo lucky that your doc recognized the fusion route as the best remedy from the get go. I wish I was more informed as to what a lisfranc fracture was and the differences between ORIF and fusion as well as have the medical reports to review before I had my ORIF surgery. I never would have chosen ORIF, but I was in a horrific car crash so it was emergency surgery that night so I didn't have the choice. Please tell me how you are doing now. I am seriously contemplating having fusion in the next few months but surgery is nothing to just jump into so I am trying to inform myself. I don't think I can live with this pain and fear that it will get worse over time and I'm young, I need some relief. I am so sorry to hear about your injury but I really hope the fusion helped. I'd love to hear about your recovery and your situation now. Thank you.

I don't think so.....Sorry. I've looked everywhere. Fusion seems to be the way to go. It sucks, for sure, but I think after fusion you may be able to get on with your life sooner than later. I feel exactly the same way as you, stuck in this pain and fearing the same long recovery with fusion. Let me know what you decided.

I had a Lisfranc fusion from when I hurt it during rugby. Four months later I was back into full contact with some pain. Now I am a little over a year post-op and I dont notice it at all. I had previously hurt my foot in a similar fashion but no other doctor bothered to look for it until I asked my last doctor about it. Id say it was the best choice for me. Good luck to you!

Thanks for the reply...I really think this is the only answer for me. I can't see dealing with this pain and possibly worse pain for the rest of my life. I am glad you have had a positive recovery and you have given me hope that there is a "fix" out there. I truly hope I will, with time, and fusion, be back to my old active ways like you......Take care.

Hello all.  It has been some time since I have posted, but i guess that is a good thing.  For those of you who have dug thru the threads you will find that I had my Lisfranc joint fused Dec. of 2008 after a failed ORIF.

The fusion was one of the better desc. i have made when it comes to this unique injury.  I was once like alot of the folks on here.  I hated even walking up the driveway to get the mail.  Pretty powerfull since I am ex millitary, have run marathons, and am very active in all sports phases.

Took about 9 months for me to feel comfortable running on the road post fusion, but I was just happy to be out there doing it.

In March of 2011 I had the hardware pulled from my foot, due to me wanting to kick things without the hardware pain ( soccerballs, footballs, heavey bag, etc.)   This went better then expected and I feel I actually have more movement in my foot now.

Bottom line for me was that the ORIF still left a gap in the lisfranc joint and the whole foot started to fall appart.  The fusion was the only option left and I am glad I did it.   It is still a stiff foot and I limit my barefoot walking.  I use a soft insole with no orthitics.  The only arth. i have is in the next joint, but this was due to walking on the foot after the failed ORIF and the foot starting to collapse.

Hope this helps someone with there desc. on surgery.  Do your homework, talk to your surgeon,  an only use a Foot and Ankle specialist-  anything less would be entirely unacceptable.  This is your life and your mobility your about to alter. Make sure He or she has done this surgery many times with success.

Hope you all heal well and get back to all the things you want to do.  I am about 90%now and am happy with that.
