I had ORIF surgery 2 years ago and am currently contemplating having my 1st and 2nd mets fused. I have arthritis in my right foot and am only 26. I hurt my foot when my friend jumped on my and i landed on my foot in a weird way. It hurt like crazy and was extremely swollen. Anyway, i had my ORIF done and i seemed to heal pretty fast. Did the cast, the boot, etc and was doing ok. I had pain in my foot but i ended up just getting used to it. I thought it eventually would go away but it hasn't. I have arthritis now and still cant go on my toes without considerable pain. My foot also gets slightly swollen when i am more active (hiking, walking long distances, etc) for a couple days in a row. My turning point was a couple months ago when i started getting a tingling in my foot. I did some research and i think it might be some type of nerve damage. My foot also has a bump that formed on the top of it due to my bones moving slightly for the last two years. This bump makes it hard to put on shoes and makes wearing them also quite uncomfortable. I figure it might be better to get the fusion so i can hopefully stop this arthritis pain and also stop any further nerve and "deformation" damage that i have done to my foot. Does anyone have any ideas/inputs? Please help me with any info. Thanks!

I had a lisfranc fracture in Jan 07, pins put in... didn't help... so much pain.... turns out I also destroyed my ankle...
My second surgery was to have the pins removed, and they checked my ankle stability at the same time... woke up to find out .. I needed another surgery on my ankle...
Third surgery they stabilized my ankle .. but not enough.
For 15 months I had unbelievable swelling, pain, etc. Right now... I can't even sit for more than a couple of hours without my ankle turning into a grapefruit, and my foot is sooo swollen.. it's unbelievable.
They did an MRI and a Spec CT, the bones are degenerating (which is common I've heard) and the tendons, muscles, etc are all popping off the bones.
I'm scheduled for a a mid foot fusion and they are also rebuilding my ankle with donated tissue at that time.. this will happen Jan 26th 2011.
I know these are 2 things, but does anyone have any idea what time frame I am looking for recovery. I will have 2 surgeons, a general ortho and a foot/ankle specialist. I know I have to stay in the hospital for a couple of days...
What can I expect?

Hello all. It has been some time since I have posted, but i guess that is a good thing. For those of you who have dug thru the threads you will find that I had my Lisfranc joint fused Dec. of 2008 after a failed ORIF.
The fusion was one of the better desc. i have made when it comes to this unique injury. I was once like alot of the folks on here. I hated even walking up the driveway to get the mail. Pretty powerfull since I am ex millitary, have run marathons, and am very active in all sports phases.
Took about 9 months for me to feel comfortable running on the road post fusion, but I was just happy to be out there doing it.
In March of 2011 I had the hardware pulled from my foot, due to me wanting to kick things without the hardware pain ( soccerballs, footballs, heavey bag, etc.) This went better then expected and I feel I actually have more movement in my foot now.
Bottom line for me was that the ORIF still left a gap in the lisfranc joint and the whole foot started to fall appart. The fusion was the only option left and I am glad I did it. It is still a stiff foot and I limit my barefoot walking. I use a soft insole with no orthitics. The only arth. i have is in the next joint, but this was due to walking on the foot after the failed ORIF and the foot starting to collapse.
Hope this helps someone with there desc. on surgery. Do your homework, talk to your surgeon, an only use a Foot and Ankle specialist- anything less would be entirely unacceptable. This is your life and your mobility your about to alter. Make sure He or she has done this surgery many times with success.
Hope you all heal well and get back to all the things you want to do. I am about 90%now and am happy with that.
