Hi everyone,

Brief history - for over 6 years I have been a pescetarian (no meat/poultry, only fish/seafood/veg/fruit) and for the longest time I've had problems with low energy levels, feeling constantly hungry and bloating. After all this time I was fed up of not feeling well for such a long time I went to the doctor to see if my diet had anything to do with it.

Onto the test results - the levels came out at 3.3 which she said was borderline low (I think the lowest of the normal range is 3.5) and that I should eat more potassium rich foods. The reason I am here is because I eat a LOT of bananas in a week (at least 2 a day), I also eat kiwi, oranges, and a lot of other food (frequently) that is high in potassium. I also keep dairy consumption low but I do make sure I get enough calcium.

I don't want to be jumping the gun here, but when I was 6mnths old (now in my 20's), my right kidney was removed because of Wilm's tumour. could this contribute to overall lower background potassium levels as an individual, rather than an actual problem?

Any help is appreciated, Thanks!

Hello,

There can be many reasons for low potassium levels.  From what you say it seems that your getting enough potassium in your diet.  The kidney situation is another matter.  The kidney is responsible for maintaing blood levels of potassium so there could be a problem there.  On the other hand the adrenal glands send hormones to tell your kidney what to do with minerals.  Whethere to resorb them or pee them out.  You might want o have your doctor check your adrenal gland function and check your urine potassium levels.
