Most likely not because most of the weight you gain fromantic the methadone is all water . So im aure if u did that you would gain the water weight right back again. My friend does used to be 130 lbs when she started clinc . Got up to 140mg of methadone . She had to get a quick 21 taper . Then she went to jail and in two weeks juat laying around no excersize no nothing and in two weeks lost 50 lbs . It was all that water your body was retaining. Why other drug stay in your system longer too.

To faerygreen: thanks for your post, I'm going to be having a colonoscopy too, and am on 127mgs. I've been steadily dropping my dose from 135, but had some issues and needed to go back up 10 mgs from 117.(I've been on methadone for 15 yrs. Been clean for 10 and am trying to get off for good.) Personally, i couldnt care less what the MDs think of me, this is who i am, i have beaten my addiction to heroin and am proud of that... BUT, I am terrified of gen. anesthetic in combination with methadone, and am afraid that I won't get it through to them, or they'll ignore my situation or some other stupid thing. I guess opening my mouth at them in regards to my methadone, and not stopping, is all I can do!

I also wanted to ask, did any of you take your methadone dose on the day of your surgery?prior to surgery?

I am having the same surgery as you had at the end of April. I am only on 23mg decreasing process and by the time surgery is here maybe only at 8mg. How did your surgery go and what did you end up doing? I have the same worries for exactly the same reason. That look like you just got caught robbing the med closet as a whacked out junkie. Hate that look (no respect given after someone knows)

DanDan sorry mate but you are very misinformed. If Methadone and other pain killers should not be taken 24 hours after surgery there would be a LOT of people walking (or lying) around in major pain!!!!!!!!!! Of course they can be taken, under medical supervision that is!!!!

I see a lot of high doses on here, the clinic I attend will only go to 160 mg, I take 60 mg and they want me to go up all the time, I feel fine at 60 mg it wears off before 24 hrs but as long as keep taking it at the same time every day I can deal with it. people please only take the dose the dose you live with, don't stay on high doses, below 80 mg is better for your health, any dose will rot your teeth out because of the sugar cravings, your body needs the high carbs to function at the level to make you feel normal, the problem with higher doses is higher cravings for sugar intake, plus every one on methadone suffers from severe constipation and over time it could be doing real harm to your health. I take 2,000 mg of cinnamon to reduce my blood sugar levels and help reduce the sugar cravings, Take one in the morning and one after I get home otherwise you will be burping up cinnamon. any super market pharmacy sells it. I need all my teeth removed and dentures put in can't afford the implants, may need bone grafting done also from the infections I get from the cavities....just letting every one know been on methadone for 10 years now, only way to get off it is go under a coma for six weeks.

can i ask you? do you ,or have you ever thought about reducing your 180 mls of meth??? I am not judging as I am an addict that has reduced from 70 mls(my highest dose), to now 21, I drop 2 ml every 3 weeks, and hope to be methadone free in 30 weeks!!!!. I have been clean nearly 4 yrs , and want to be free completely, and also want to get dental work, as the methadone has my teeth wrecked!! The reason I on this site was to find out ,is it safe to have sedation on methadone???????

Yes you could die, must tell Dr if on methadone. Cut the methadone for at least three days prior to your surgery also.

I know it's been over a year since you posted this. I am so sorry you had to go though such an experience. Apparently, it put you into severe withdrawal. Doctors! Why don't they put themselves in our position? So many seem incapable of empathy and compassion. Let alone READING a chart correctly. I've been on maintenance for 20 years. I'm just waiting to be told I need hip replacement and admit I'm scared. Thanks for telling your story. May good karma always be with you. Mrs X.

you are absolutely crazy if you don't tell your doctor about the methadone that's just asking for issues to occur. come on think about that for a second that's not in your best interest my friend.

They died from drug abuse not surgery, my gf just had breast augmentation done on 180mg of methadone with no issues but she did inform her doc. Unfortunately there is a stigma but I believe ur best option is telling doc from get go so u don't waste one another's time. If this isn't possible because u already have said doctor write a letter explaining your situation in depth so they're not put on the spot with 15 min appointment. The best to all and gl

I've been on Methadone for 7 years and I'd say that over the years physicians have been better educated on the benefits of Methadone and the challenges it provides for healthcare providers while caring for a patient. My best advice is to be honest. The best thing to do is to ensure that you have an active voice in your healthcare plan and any procedures but especially those requiring pain/sedation before and after the procedure.
I will say in Arkansas that care for patients on Methadone is better. Just remember, Honesty. Don't hide it because you'll be the one that's effected. I hope this helps.
