Has anyone been presribed Methadone for pain and then tried to stop taking it and experienced pain that was even worse than the original pain? About a year ago, I ended up in a pain clinic for chronic pain from neck injuries and endometriosis. I was put on Fentanyl patches, and they did help the pain but one of the side effects was a complete change in my personality. I simply couldn't function and was highly emotional. So I switched to Methadone, hoping that the side effects would be more tolerable. Sadly, it made me just as miserable and I've actually forgotten who I truly am. It has ruined countless relationships, and I have finally just decided I can't stand it anymore. I don't want medications to just rule my life -- I want to be myself again! I tapered off the methadone, and things seemed to be going along just fine. But when I was completely off the pills, I developed agonizing pain in my shoulders and neck. The muscle spasms were unbearable! I tried to stick it out for several days, but I finally couldn't take it anymore and took 5 mg of methadone. I started to feel better, and am now taking one 10 mg pill, divided into two doses per day. My doc had put me on clonidine to help with the withdrawals but it made me so weak I couldn't get out of bed. I'm at my wit's end. I don't want to be on pain pills for the rest of my life. Just the one pill per day is keeping the pain at bay, but it is making my emotions so volatile and I feel like I'm poisoning myself. I want my life back! Has anyone gone through this successfully? Any suggestions would be so appreciated!

I feel for you I am on methadone myself, I am trying to get off myself. Ask your doctor about this first there are other non opiate meds that take the withdraws away but it kicks you into sick first. I don't know the name but my doc said when I hit the wall of sickness he will put me on it. Also ask your doctor about the liquid methadone and go down 1 mil a week, cause it takes a week to get used to the new dose. Taper off that way you might have to go to a clinic, that is where I go and it is helping cause I have other people to talk to about it. Also the non drug things that might help is tomatos in any form ketchup spagetti salads it takes the edge off I don't know why but it does. Caffine start with coffee in the morning and any energy drink later it will wake you up and take the edge off. With that said STAY AWAY FROM 5 HOUR ENERGY it has some chemical in it will turn you red. Just be careful and ask your doctor first. The last but not least CANDY always keep candy with you the sugar helps so much. I hope this helped ALWAYS ASK YOUR DOCTOR FIRST this is my experince only keep busy and join a support group and ask the family to go to alanon they will understand you better. I wish you the best and your family the best. It will take time but be strong and you WILL make it. I hope it helped.
