Hi Guest,

my name is Kathy am just new, i came on to see if clotting after a marina coil is removed is normal but am shocked to read that periods are irregular and can last days....i had my coil put in sept 08 or 07 i cant remember but had it removed on Monday 26/04/10 i bled the day i got it removed a little only on pants after it had been taken out, over the next 2 days protected myself while at work and on Thursday i came home from work to find myself bleeding very heavily and loosing large clots, i had 4 changes of phajama bottoms in 4 hrs the tampons would not hold the blood, over night i was ok, the following day i was ok till tea time when i drove 20 miles in 45 minutes and was flooded again at the other end of my journey, i have been like this for only 3 days, but considering when i had the coil in i was lucky to see a proper period it would be very light pink on the tip of a tampon not worth the bother really, i am going to be well peeved if this is what i have to put up with now when i have had 28 day cycles since starting my periods 33yrs ago, especially as none of this was explained before hand and i was using it as a prevention to hormonal boils and nothing else...arghhhhh!!!

so to answer your question YES!! i to am suffering heavy blood lose and clots within days of having it taken out......

I was looking for comments from other women about Mirena. I had my placed in mid February. Now the very end of May I have only had one week free from bleeding. It has been irregular with light days and heavy days combinded. I have also had clotting. I wanted to wait it out since my sister is having the extreme opposite with only having two cycles since getting it over a year ago. I don't think the bleeding and pains are worth the very few opportunities for unprotected sex. After reading that the problems will most likely continue after removal, I think it's time to take it out. Is ther an alternative?

Hi i had the marina fitted in may and took it out myself in july.
i didnt have a period at all but i did experience dodgy moods (anger, depression, happy, sad) i was all over the place. I came on web 2 c other peoples stories about the marina and all i read was disaster stories which quite frankly scared me to the point that i didnt want it inside me n e more so i decided to pull it out myself, which was weirdly easy and unpainful.
I bled 4 around 4 days. it didnt have n e clots but it was fairly heavy, wot was strange thou was that it didnt trail off, it jus stopped all of a sudden. then couple weeks later i started bleeding like this after sex for like 10 mins then it'd stop. I've just had wot i think was a period. really different 2 n e other that ive had simply because i've been unsure as to whether or not it was actually a period or if i were jus bleeding.....its been mainly apparent whilst wiping like others of u have mentioned, and the blood is just different 2 wot im used to of a typical period, with a mixture of red (new) blood and brown (old) blood. i think it has stopped now, but i cud b wrong lol. Im jus happy i took it out wen i did as so many of u had it in for yrs and have really suffered since.
I guess im on here as a warning to people considering having 1 fitted....dont do it, its not worth it! there r other ways 2 protect urself against pregnacy that dont mess ur insides up.......I hope every1 on here gets sum sort of normality back. I want to have a baby, just hope i can!
best wishes x

Hi I had my mirena removed about 6 weeks ago after having it for 4 yrs. Since then Im bleeding all the time and any time I have sex with my husband I bleed a lot and there is pain. I know this is due to the Mirena after reading all the comments and we all have very similarities. Now im worried there is something wrong after reading the top 10 reasons why you might bleed during intercourse. There is an entire section that says its due to contraceptives.

Hi there! Yes, I had the Mirena twice for 8 years altogether, and developed a large dermoid cyst which I have just had major surgery to remove. The doctors don't seem to think there is a connection, but why on earth not? It says on the Mirena side-effects list that it causes ovarian cysts in 12% of women! So I am going to have the mirena removed asap.

Good luck!

I just had my second Mirena inserted 10 days ago. The first one was a dream. The second has been different. 4 days after insertion, cramping and bleeding stopped. 5 days after insertion I started experiencing numbness and tingling in my right arm and leg. My right calf swelled up like a balloon and became uncomfortable. The swelling in my leg subsided, but tingling and numbness have continued over the last week with some slight discomfort (not cramping) in my abdomen. I can feel the tingling radiating out from my uterus so I am 100% sure that Mirena is the cause despite the fact that the doctor says no way. I was sent to the ER to check for stroke and/or blood clot and was sent home saying there was nothing wrong with me. The tingling at times is in my face and back as well. When I feel more discomfort in my abdomen, the tingling and numbness temporarily subside. I have an appointment to have it checked today and most likely removed. Very disappointed because the first one was such a success and I don't want to throw $800 down the tubes...but I cannot live like this for the next five years. I do believe the Mirena is a great device when it works. Not sure if it was the insertion of it which went wrong...or if it is because it is my second...or if it moved around after insertion. I encourage everyone to make their own decision before this. I would love to keep this and would if I wasn't concerned about how it is making me feel and the possible long term side effects.

Hi Ladies
I've just had my second Mirena removed - no problems with the first, but I've suffered with irregular bleeding all the way through with the second - it was in for 4 years. The bleeding was much worse after sex and could easily last for three weeks at a time. My GP said it was nothing to do with Mirena but couldn't explain it otherwise. It has got much worse recently and before Christmas I had a light period which lasted for nearly six weeks. I felt exhausted all the time and really down. I returned to my GP who agreed to remove it. She had also suffered problems after having a second Mirena fitted so was more sympathetic this time! I have started taking a mini pill, which I was reluctant to do as had bad mood swings and headaches last time, but I can't afford to get pregnant due to medication I take for high blood pressure. However, I am now suffering with excessive heavy bleeding, with abdominal cramps like I haven't experienced since I was a teenager and massive PMT symptoms! (My family are ready to run for the hills!). Has anyone else had heavy bleeding within days of removal or should I return to my GP?

I had my only child when I was 18 and was advised by my doctor to get Marina exactly six weeks after my delivery.  I heard it was the best thing out there and I wasn't ready to have another baby so I agreed.  It has literally been the worst mistake I have ever made in my life.  Before I got Marina inserted I was thin even after having my baby.  Also ever since I started my period when I was younger I always had a constant regular, normal, once a month period that I never EVER missed.  From the moment they put that thing in me I completely stopped having periods.  I had it in for 4 years and not once did I ever have a period.  I asked my doctor and she said sometimes that can happen, but it still didn't feel right.  I started gaining weight immediately afterward when I had always been thin my whole life.  I mean I seriously bloated up like a blow fish, and no matter how much I exercised or ate right it wouldn't go away.  I tried everything.  For 4 years I was depressed, I had mood swings like crazy ,and  I cried all the time for no reason at all.  I got on antidepressants but nothing helped.  I constantly had cramps in my ovaries and lower back.  A few times it got so painful that I ended up having to go to the ER and they finally found I had multiple cysts on my ovaries.  I also was constantly fatigued.  I got tired so easily and rarely had the energy to want to do anything.  After 4 horrible years going through all this c**p I finally realized it was the Marina IUD, and I made an appointment to get it taken out, which was very painful by the way.  But oh my goodness when they finally got that thing out of me.. from the second they took it out I felt amazing for the first time in what felt like FOREVER.  I seriously felt like a new woman.  Within the weeks that followed I started to feel better and better, but I was kind of getting worried because I still hadn't started my period.  It took 6 months for me to get my first period in almost 5 years!  It was heavy but only lasted for 2 days, stopped and then I didn't get another one for 3 months, then got my third in 5 months.  They were all very odd and irregular.  I hoped that everything would go back to normal in good time but it's now been almost 3 years since I got that thing out and I'm still not having a normal period.  I've almost completely lost all my weight though.  Ever since I got it out the weight has just fallen off really fast and I don't even have to try.  My husband and I have tried to have another child now for a year and a half to no avail.  I'd give anything if I could go back in time and never have gotten Marina.  I feel like it ruined my life, and I missed out on almost 5 years of my life because of it.  It's been 3 years since I got it out and the hormones from it still haven't run their course.  I just want this to be over so I can feel like myself again.  I'm probably the only woman to ever say this, but I'd give anything to have a normal period again.  I'd rather feel that pain instead of having to go through all of this.  I honestly don't know if I'll ever be the same again.  I don't know if it's messed me up so much that I'll never be able to conceive another child or what.  All I know is it's not worth it ladies.  DON'T GET MARINA IT"S NOT RIGHT TO NOT HAVE YOUR PERIOD.  It's not worth it.  Marina has honestly ruined my life and there's nothing I can do about it.

I've just started with exactly the same thing, period pain and spotting and now a period when I haven't had one for nearly 3 years. It's a bit of a shock and I didn't know whether to go to the gp or not? The whole point of the coil was to stop pmt painful and heavy periods. I really don't want it back again. Also how do we know it's working still if periods have returned?

Yes I had half my overy removed after marina coil for ten years. Have recently had marina removed to try for a baby, it's been 3 months of unprotected sex daily and still not pregnant. Also my periods are between 22 days and 30 and very very light. Which last for a day and a half to three. Wondering why?
