>;) Before pregnancy I weighed a whole 120lbs. I had my daughter and ended prego stages at a whole 152lbs. Eight weeks later I had the morena put in. I was steadily losing the prego weight and weighed 135lbs at the time. One month later I weighed 148lbs and couldn't figure out why. Since then I have been basically killing myself with diets, 3x a day work out sessions, and weight loss classes as well as supplements. UUURRRGGG and the entire time I have lost maybe 5lbs. I am a healthy eater, 21 years old, and a over all very active person. I have always had a high metabolism and now I have to basically starve myself to lose a pound. I just can't figure it out. The stupid IUD comes out next week and I have learned my lesson. Who cares about having a period so long as you don't have people asking how far along you are 8 months post partum. >;)

I had my Mirena put in 3 years ago this month after deciding having two chidren was perfect and wanting to free myself with easier birth control. WELL. Steadily over the past three years I have put on more than 60 pounds and have had NO success dieting/exercising on rigorous and moderate levels. I have been beating myself up over this wondering how I could get this way and constantly scrutinizing my diet, etc. Finally, I realized it wasn't what I was putting in my MOUTH, it had to be the Mirena, since this was the only thing different.

I had asked my doc about it a few times and two of them felt the Mirena would not have this effect. I haven't had my period in three years! this can't be normal. I felt like I was crazy and lazy at the same time.

SO, I'm making an appointment to get it out....i need to prove to myself that I'm not crazy and it is this IUD. I opted for the Mirena over 10 year one to avoid heavier periods....how I regret it altogether. I told my husband he needs to get a vasectomy....I'm done with changing my body.

I have done a lot of searching online and weight gain seems to be a common issue that isn't discussed by docs....though a friend who is a gyno confirms this could be the case, as she sees many women gain weight from progeterone Depo shots, so feels the Mirena would have same effect on some women (like me and many of you!).

I got the Mirena 4 months ago upon the suggestion of my doctor for treating very heavy periods. While my periods themselves are much lighter, it seems I'm always spotting. While it's eased up slightly this past month, I still always have to wear a liner. I've not had a sex drive since way before the Mirena and don't have a partner, but if I did, I couldn't imagine wanting to have sex because I just don't feel clean always having spotting. Plus, I feel like I always have PMS. I'm always bloated, have food cravings, and my skin and hair always looks like it used to right before my period. Another thing is that I get at unpredictable times, very severe pains that make me double over. I went back to the doctor and had an ultrasound which showed the Mirena was in place. The doctor said it might be ovarian cysts bursting that is causing the pain. It's hard because they come out of the blue and I literally can't speak or stand up straight. I spent a lot of money to get the Mirena, so part of me feels like I should keep it. I'm also frustrated because I really wanted a treatment for my heavy periods, which really interfere with my ability to travel and do normal activities, that would still allow me to maybe have kids one day. Still, I hate feeling so fat and bloated all the time. My stomach is so big, I look pregnant. This is similar to how I would be before and on my periods, but now it's all the time. It's just miserable. I did research Mirena online and was very concerned before I got it, but the doctor said all the stuff I read was nonsense -- that the hormones were so light and didn't enter the blood stream to cause such symptoms. All I know is I don't like how I feel or look. I would like to know if anyone who had similar symptoms ever noticed them easing over time.

Jst wanted to add to this post...I am getting my IUD taken out this week b/c I have had it since Sept 2004 and have gained 46lbs...I lost 30lbs last summer by cutting my calorie intake to 800cals each day and working out 4x week for 1.5hr cardio and strength training for three months every day...and only lost 30lbs! I was extreme dieting b/c I felt myself getting fat! and I have since Dec 2004. I have since gained the 30lbs back since going back to my normal 1200cal diet...1200, not 2000 like everyone else...and I have a full time work out regimen I do 4x each week faithfully. I want the IUD (Mirena) out but I want effective no worry birth control too...?

I am so glad I found this website! I got my IUD (Mirena) 3 months after my daughter was born back in Nov 2006. Since then, I haven't been able to loose the weight that I gained from having by baby. Before the pregnancy, I weighed between 125-130lbs. I gained 30 lbs during the pregnancy. After birth, I was on the right track of loosing all of my baby weight until I got my IUD! Now I weigh a whopping 150lbs, and can't get the weight off of my thighs, butt, tummy and waist! No matter what I do. I am also in the military and very active! Since the IUD (Mirena) I also have developed a bad case of acne. My period used to be 3-5 days max and not very heavy, now I have 7 days of a light period, which I HATE! I am going to ask my doc if I can replace this with the copper (no hormone) IUD. These hormones are screwing my, once beautiful, body up. Is anyone else having these same issues?????? ?

I will be a weight loss guinea pig for the Mirena. I'm having one inserted this afternoon.

After the birth of my second child I had a Mirena inserted. I loved it. Very few periods and MUCH lighter than the torrents that I had before hand. I still felt like I was having a cycle (body changes during ovulation, chin pimple at the time I would normally have a period, and a little bloating around period time). But I lost all of the baby weight + some. We celebrated the new body by having the Mirena removed and having another baby. Fertility returned immediately..surprisingly so. That was a solid 65 pound weight gain pregnancy.

Since the birth of my 3rd baby, who is still breastfeeding, I have tried Errin a progesterine only mini-pill. That was a disaster. Bloating, bleeding, acne, the works. I'm going back to Mirena.

I still have about 20 pounds to lose from the last baby. I will keep this line informed as to whether I feel the weight is still coming off or if I'm heading in the wrong direction.

Best of luck to everyone with the birth control dilemma!

Hi all,

I'm 26 and have never had a baby. I had the Mirena inserted almost 8 weeks ago. My stats prior to Mirena:

- On the normal/overweight side of the spectrum (size 13 at 5'4" and 155-160 lbs.).
- Breasts size 38C.
- On the higher side of BP (usually around 125/90).
- Heavy period for about 3 days followed by light spotting for another 3 days. Mild to considerable cramping on first day of period.
- Moderate, occasional irritability and mood swings during PMS.
- Relatively high sex drive.
- Moderate exercise (30 min. swimming 3x a week) combined with 1200 Calorie diet kept me on a steady 1 lb. per week weight loss.

Today i came in for my follow-up check-up. 8 weeks and an IUD later:

- I weigh 1 lb. heavier since the day i had the IUD put in... But i have been slacking off on my exercise, so i can't directly contribute it to the IUD.
- BP was surprisingly low (117/81).
- The two periods i've had were lighter but last about 10 days. Doc said in about 4 mo. they might disappear altogether.
- Cramps have moved to two days prior to getting my period... CRAZY pain that reduced me to tears. Could be helped with some Tylenol.
- Mild spotting that lasted 3 days around the time of ovulation, accompanied by very mild cramping.
- My breasts have become somewhat smaller and less firm (if not saggier altogether). Not by a full cup, but i could tell the difference.
- Very, very short temper especially around PMS time. Heavy mood swings and depressed feelings. Good thing my boyfriend is very supportive.
- No noticeable change in sex drive... I still want it as much as my bf does.
- Acne bursts during the first week post insertion... Have disappeared since, but my skin texture is a little bit more coarse.

So the 1 lb gain may or may not be caused by the IUD... Granted, I am menstruating so it might just be water retention, and it also is still within my normal weight fluctuation, but i fear it might just be one of those type of weight gain that slowly creeps up on you... I guess i'll just have to wait and see.

I'll post more updates as time progresses....

I have had the mirena since march 2004. After I had my second child I lost all of the baby weight (I had my daughter 12/03). After the Mirena I gained 15 lbs immediately. I lose and gain weight. I have gone from a size 5/6 to a size 12 back down to a size 8 and now Im at a size 10 pushing a 12 depending on the brand. I havent changed my eating habbits at all. I love that I don't have periods, but I much rather have a period and be back to my normal weight. I'm tired of buying clothes, but I really am too inconsistent to get on traditional birthcontrol.

There is no other explanation for it! I'm a runner & also a yoga teacher. I counted every single calorie I ate last week (1200-1300/day) exercised 5 days & actually GAINED 5 LBS! There is NO WAY a doctor can tell me the IUD isn't to blame. I don't find excuses for weight gain - if I ever gain the occasional 5, or maybe 10 lbs, I get strict for about 4 weeks & lose it all. I have tried this for the past 2 months & have only gained more weight. I'm getting my IUD removed Friday. I'll worry about my birth control later, but right now, I just want to lose the 20 pounds I've gained since getting this thing in September. I'll just have my own sex, if necessary, for the next several months!!!

I have had the Mirena for a little over 2 years, and I've had so many problems related to it, it's not even funny. After I had my 2nd daughter, I had the Mirena inserted in January 2006, and I weighed 120 pounds, and actually felt really good about my body. Within a few weeks I was completely unstable emotionally. I was constantly depressed, and mood swings from nowhere. My poor husband had to deal with ALOT. We even split up. Not to mention, I bled for 10 months straight and now I don't have a regular cycle and I erratically spot. I've gained about 25 pounds, and it's really depressing for me to try to wear my old clothes. I don't like the way I look now. Also, I've had horrible facial breakouts. My doctor didn't tell me that all of these were side effects of the Mirena. I have an appointment to have this removed and replaced with a copper IUD which has no hormones. I'm hoping this takes care of the problems.

I have had the Mirena IUD for 3 years. Last year I wanted to get it out & switch to Paraguard. They convinced me otherwise. Now I am going to get sure that Paraguard is OK for me (which they didn't do last time). Since I got it put in I put on about 25 pounds & it won't come off. Now I gained 35 during my pregnancy, which was almost 7 years ago. I got the "baby" wieght off & actually managed to be a size smaller than I was before I was pregnant. But since this IUD got put in, forget it. I even got my thyroid tested to see if it was underactive, it wasn't. Plus my BP is up, I think in part that I am stressed about the weight gain. Which I was told I shouldn't have a problem with it. I'm glad I found others who had a similar problem so I know I am not crazy.

Ok, I have had the Mirena for 2 months now. I have put on 25 lbs since. I have had massive hair loss, starting to see scalp in some spots. I have been depressed and extremely moody. I am a mother of 5 month old twins that only gained 22 lbs with the pregnancy and was back in to my size 6 a week after birth. So this has been very overwhelming for me to continually gain weight. I work out 6 days a week running 2 miles day and 3x week strength training. I am bloated and feel awful. After reading all these posts I now know that it has to be the Mirena. I am very disappointed that my doctors told me that there will be hardly any symptoms. Also, my sister has had the Mirena in for a year now and has put on over 40 lbs. and too is experiencing hair loss. This is how we figured out it may be the Mirena. I think it definitely effects certain people differently. And for those of you who think that we need to work out more or eat less calories, thats obviously not the answer. I am scheduled to have this out next week and I will keep you all posted. Good luck!
