I'm nearly 34 with 4 kids and have had the Mirena for just over 4 years. I've always been of a curvy nature, but the weight I've put on is ridiculous. It's taken this long to realise that it's because of the IUD. I was about 14 stone (I'm English so that's probably about 195 pounds) when it first went in and now I'm closer to 18 stone (252 pounds). I'm 5' 8" tall and I've always been naturally big, but I've always been fit as well. I work 5 days a week and try to swim at least once a week. I've never been one to just sit around but after having been ravaged by the effects of the IUD, I'm am very tired all the time. The IUD is due to be removed early next year, but I'm doing it a lot sooner. I won't be having another one put in. It's been absolutely brilliant in terms of birth control, but I don't think that it's particularly healthy to not have periods as well as carry around a HUGE belly. My knees and ankles are starting to ache and I'm feeling myself getting more and more down about it all. I quite like my larger boobs but I'll sacrifice them for the sake of my health. My husband had offered to have the snip but I don't think I'm ready to close the book on having more kids, so I think in the meantime we'll have fun with condoms. I want my body back. I'm so glad I'm not on my own. xxx

I have had the IUD now for 2 years. Weight gain is a issue yes! I am sick of it and may take the IUD out. I cant seem to find a happy medium and want to lost weight. NOT gain it! SO your answer is yes.. you are probably gaining weight because of the IUD

I have had the Mirena for a year and half. After my 3rd child, I had the regular copper IUD put in 6 weeks later, that was OK, had a little heavier bleeding, but other than that, it was fine, I had lost ALL my baby weight, looked better than before I started having kids! That was 7 years ago, age 31. A year and a half ago, my mid wife recommended the Mirena, she said I would love it, little to no bleeding, etc. Well, I too have steadily gained weight in that time, all in my belly, arm flab, etc. Have moodiness, not wanting sex, hair loss, etc. I LOVE not having full flow periods, but can not stand the weight gain, I have not had headaches yet. But have gained 10-15 lbs in 1 1/2 years. I made an appt to have it taken out next week. I am not looking forward to periods again, but I have to get back to normal for my familes sake.
I almost cried when I read this and found this forum, I was upset I waited this long to research it and hear what others were saying, but happy I wasn't alone.

Wow! I am disgusted. I asked my doctor if I would gain weight with Mirena and I was told "Why, do you have a problem gaining weight?" My answer was "Not now, but I don't want to." He said that wouldn't be a problem. It's now been about 3 months and I'm 10 pounds heavier. It's probably only 10 pounds because I've been working my butt off once I saw I was gaining weight. I used to run 2-3 miles and now I'm running 7 and doing yoga and core conditioning classes and weights and nothing is taking the weight off. I finally thought I'd Google "Mirena and weight gain" and boy am I horrified but validated all at the same time. My doctor is getting a call tomorrow. I would much rather take a pill everyday than gain weight. Thank you guys for taking the time to contribute to this. I know my doctor will tell me that it's not because of the IUD, but now I know better than to believe him.

I am 5'5 and was 125 lbs before I got the IUD. I had it for four months and gained 25 pounds. I was a grand total of 150lbs. ALL of the weight was in my stomach. My stomah was so bloated constantly andI looked pregnant, but I was not. I got the IUD out. I have had it out for maybe 8 days.. I have los 8 lbs already. I have not had any diet or exercise either. My stomach is flatter and no longer bloated and distended. I urg all who have the IUD and have gained weight to get it taken out and watch the pounds melt away. I feel better!

I can't believe what am reading! I've had the Mirena for 3yrs now and I went from weighing 155-160lbs to 200-210lbs. When I mentioned the weight gain to my gyn she acted as if I was crazy! Diet and exercise only work for a short period of time and I just get bigger after a while. I want it removed so bad, but I was very fertile before and don't want to take any chances because I don't want anymore children even though I look pregnant now. I feel everyones pain! :'(

Well I finally know what my problem is! I had an episode of depression a week ago, and had no idea what caused it. I just had a baby at the end of March and thought it was just hormones. I had the mirena put in a little over a month ago, and have put on a couple pounds. I lost all my baby weight right away, but when i got the mirena, it came back. My stomache now looks like a beer belly and i don't even drink. I would much rather put up with a period once a month then gain weight like this. All i want to do is eat, and it's horrible. I can't take BC pills bc they turn me into a crazy woman. After reading all your responses Im seriously considering having it removed. My husband wants a vasectomy anyway bc we are done having kids.

I didn't know that I was gaining weight until I read this. I had my son 7 1/2 months ago and I got the IUD put in 6 weeks after giving birth. I lost 1/2 of my baby weight and after I got the IUD put in I gained about almost 40 punds. My son is almost 8 months old and I am almost at 250 pounds. My doctor told me that I would not gain weight and I feel like a HOT AIR BALLOON. He also told me that there were NO side effects. Thank you to all the people who posted their advice/feelings. I have been very hormonal(MOOD SWINGS) sometimes I feel like crying, sometimes I feel angry and thats just the beginning. Boy is my doctor getting a call on Monday.

I have gained 15 lbs in a matter of a few months since the Mirena was put in. It is depressing and I am miserable because of it. I have asked my doctor a few times if he thinks it could be the Mirena but he assures me it isn't. The first few days after I had it put in I was miserable nothing could make me happy. I am also tired all the time, I fall asleep on short trips in the car while my husband drives of coarse. I fear of what my hormones will be like once I remove it? Can someone tell me what they went through? Is it as painful as when it was put in? How was your mood afterwards? Thanks

Hi there--I'd suggest since you already have it, keep it for at least 6 months. If you find that your side effects haven't gone away or have gotten worse, or if (God forbid) you get new ones that others here have gotten, get it removed then. Just keep aware of how you're feeling and whether you're responding any differently to things than before you had it inserted.
Removal is NOTHING like insertion--a split second and a sharp cramp and then it's over.
I'm now 2 months post removal and I'm still having hormonal issues, but they're directly related to my period. Much heavier than before I ever started BC (I'm currently having one now and I'm leaking through a super tampon every 2-3 hours) and having major cramps. My first period came 33 days after the inital removal bleeding, and this one (technically my third) came at 26 days. It's incredibly hard for me to tell what my cycle is doing in order to do proper NFP (I don't think I ovulated last month)--I'm doing everything except BBT charts and I never got a + ovulation from those urine strips starting at day 10. I'm still expecting to normalize eventually, but it made for a VERY nervous 2 months (went thru 4 HPT's already, lol).
On the flip side, my emotions are evening out and my body is continuing to shapen up. No more sweets cravings and I'm able to eat quite a bit less without feeling hungry right after. My chin hair is appearing to be going away slowly and my hair is softer. My BF is very happy with my personality lately, and things that would send me over the edge aren't creating near the reaction they used to. All in all, things are looking good!

it's better to actually be pregnant than to look pregnant with this awful mirena.
like others here, i also googled mirena weight gain and found out it was a common thing. tomorrow i'll call the doctor.
plus, my fet are all swollen. the skin got spongy. if i kneel at yoga class, in no-time tha pattern of the mattress is on my legs, meaning they are swollen.
it was nice to have proper sex for 2 months sine i put the mirena, but now sex-drive is gone and looking at myself in the mirror makes it worse. i got a big belly in 2 months.
and - cramps! got up one night feeling i am about to have another baby, it hurt so much.
i wish i could warn all the others.... but it's individual as we were told.

I have always been eating right and workout for more than 1hr a day 5 days a week. After my baby I went back to the 116 pounds I was before the baby. After Mirena I noticed weight gain and I was told by my doctor that that would not happen with Mirena, now I weight 132...and I still workout 5 days a week for more than 1hr a day!!!

Be careful b/c if he can feel it, it could be that it is not well inserted and you can get pregnant...

i had my mirena put in about 4 1/2 months ago. within the last couple of months, i've noticed my skin is constantly breaking out and that i've been gaining weight. i hadn't really thought about mirena causing it until recently. i checked the website and found that it does cause acne. i'm 27, i shouldn't look worse than i did at 15!! at first i thought the weight gain was just me, so i started riding my bicycle and reducing my portions. i've cut out most of the foods i used to enjoy, and only drink water now (i was a big coke drinker for years). i'm a nurse, so i'm frequently on my feet. i'm still consistently gaining instead of losing. i'm also gaining a lot of weight in my face, which didn't even happen when i was pregnant! i haven't had a period, which has been nice, but now for about a week and a half, i've had brown spotting. i'm calling my doctor after the weekend to get it removed.
