When I woke up this morning the sun was shining, the birds were singing and the cold I ve been fighting for the past couple of days felt like it was subsiding. I felt like a good day. The temperature outside was 50F degrees which for me is perfect running temp and the sky was a mixture of sun and cloud with no rain in sight. We had to fight traffic to get to starting line but I ended up making it there with 10 minutes to spare.

I ve never been a part of a race so large about 10,000 runners so the start seemed pretty chaotic. Getting there as late as I did, the front of the chute was already filled up and I couldn t get up to the pace area where I wanted to start (1:50:00) and was forced to start back at 2:10:00. I think that this worked out well because early on I was passing a lot of people and it really helped me to build my confidence.

The course was beautiful and my legs felt good. I practiced trying to drink at 4 of the aid stations (even though I didn t really need it) and I ended up soaking myself and choking and sputtering on what I did get in my mouth. It was all good though and I had a really fun day. My goal going in to the day was an 8:15 average pace which would have put me around 1:48:00 finish time. I ended up finishing in 1:46:43 (with my legs really wanting to give out over the last 1.1 miles) for an 8:08 average pace. All in all, it was a pretty satisfying first attempt at a half marathon (PR whoo-hoo!!) If anyone cares, here are my splits:

1 - 8:28
2 8:09
3 7:52
4 8:01
5 8:08
6 7:42
7 8:31
8 8:15
9 7:56
10 7:54
11 8:00
12 8:21
13.1 9:26 (8:34 pace)

1:46:43 total time, 8:08 avg pace. I think that shooting for a 3:45:00 fall marathon time is definately in reach.
