HELLO, I HAVE BEEN IN CRONIC PAIN FOR MANY YEARS AND HAVE TRIED MANY DIFFERENT PROCEDURES TO TRY AND HELP GIVE MYSELF AND MY FAMILY A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE. MY LATEST PROCEDURE WAS THE IMPLANT OF A MORPHINE PUMP. THE FIRST ONE OR TWO WEEKS AFTER THE INSTALLATION I FELT GREAT. AFTER THAT I STARTED FEELING INCREASED PAIN LEVELS IN MY HIP AND KNEE JOINTS TO THE POINT NOW 5 MONTHS IN I CAN HARDLEY WALK. IT DID NOT CLICK UNTILL MY FAMILY POINTED IT OUT THAT I WAS GETTING WORSE AND NOT BETTER SINCE THE PUMP WAS PUT IN AND I WOULD PROGRESIVELY GET WORSE EVERY TIME I RECIEVED AN INCREASE IN MY PUMP MEDICATION TO SAPOSEDLY HELP WITH THE PAIN. I LOOKED ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND A POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECT CALLED "POLYARTHRALGIA" (PAIN IN MULTIBLE JOINTS). WOULD THIS BE A POSSIBILITY? CAN CHANGING THE TYPE OF MEDICATION USED IN THE PUMP BE CHANGED TO SOME THING OTHER THAN MORPHINE THAT WOULD HELP MY PAIN AND NOT CAUSE THIS SIDE EFFECT? ARE THEIR OTHER DIRECTIONS I SHOULD BE LOOKING AT OTHER THAN THE PUMP THAT MIGHT BE CAUSING THIS NEW PROBLEM? THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP.

Opiates like Morphine can actually cause your pain threshold to lessen. This makes you feel like you are in more pain than you were originally in.

There are numerous other opiates that you can use in your pain pump such as Dilaudid, Opana, Fentanyl, Sufentanyl, and others. Consult a pain Doctor about this. Dilaudid has fewer side effects than other opiates, and you can use a lower dose because it is more potent than Morphine. This lessens the chance of infection amongst other things.

I hope this helps. :D :D :D

Hi,
I was just wondering Daniel if you ever found any relief for your pain by changing what you put in the pump?
My husband is suffering greatly and his symptoms are very similar to what you described.
We are at our wittsend trying to come up with answers, but you may have one for us.
Any help you can offer would be appreciated.
You are in our prayers!
Wendy

We have appointsment with neurologist and spine institute next week to review where he is at as I don't know what else to do its like we are loosing him from this pump instead of it making him better.
Any luck with you? You are in our prayers!

I have been on OxyContin 360 mg/24 hr with 6 30 mg ir working great. Now the dr retired and no one will write the prescriptions. I am forced to have this pump implant. Drs are chicken sh**s. My insurance pays for the drugs and they work so why change. The DEA has gone too far to eliminate the junkies at the sacrifice of true chronic pain patients. I go tomorrow to see the dr about the pump. Wish me luck as I wish you luck.

The pump has been a miracle for me. I had it put in Dec 2021. After three months of trying for the right dose, I am finally pain free. After 5 back surgeries my body couldn't handle any more. And mentally I was spent. Chronic pain does a number on your head. I was suicidal! You have no quality of life with chronic pain and the pump gave it back to me. I am so sorry it didn't work for you.

I feel your pain! My dr Torrance IPA & now I can’t get my pain pump filled by this angry Dr who straight out told me He disagreed w/my pump & everything thr ;ast doctor did! He said he’s not a pol pusher! So I left in a panic; I use 15mg oxy due to RA, pancreatitis (don’t drink or smoke from too narrow ducts & 10yrs of RA biologics plus tumors), need R knee replaced but bones porous, hands always swollen & L ankle RSD-bad reconstruct 04. So went to PC Doc & her practioner said he was uncomfortable but BP is 210/140 so go to ER, they’ll give u script to get pain managed & get BP down, ER it was worse cause I begged not to go cause ER HATES chronic pain people, sure enough the ER doc discuses my opioids IN FROM of all the folks stacked like cord wood cause Torrance ER has a TINY area. He had so much distance for me & said in a dropped voice my pump contained dilaudid;so he read my chart at least. He didn’t want to help & told me to go to my PC Dr & I told him they sent me to ER due to high BP! He got me in & my BP was 255/? They wouldn’t let me see the rest. They released me with 197/135 & said I’ve been like this for 6 months & I left w/my walker /tears & no meds! CA causes folks in pain to go use maybe or suicide….most of my dad’s side stroke out or get pancreatic cancer. I’m in sooooo much pain & as I’m in my hospital bd in my living I know I’ll not accept this impend gloom & doom! I’m an ol’ practical Eng & it’s stacked against me hanks fro m***n in Hollywood & high places! I’m out!

Polyarthralgia is very rare. But when it occurs, it is problematic. All opiates, as well as nonopiates have side effects. dilaudid is no different, not uncommonly having just as many side effects and any others. Sorting out the combinations of various opiates and nonopiates, such as ketamine, bupivacaine, ziconotide (cone snail venom), etc. is they principal factor in finding success in intrathecal ( spinal ) drug delivery. nearly always, a successful combination can be achieved. Very often, inexperienced or intimidated physicians do not explore these options fully.
