What I am personally trying to find is an alternate prescription for Oxycontin. I am taking 80 mg every 6 hours and once again have become tolerant to the point of feeling sick with withdrawal. I have been on this amount for 4 years and some how keep coming up with ways to trick my body into thinking it is getting more. At first I was taking 2 twice daily but wasn't long before I needed a break through. My doc prescribed Loratab which was good for sometime but then it became too much med altogether. So he wrote 2 prescriptions so I could work it out to 3 times a day. Once again I was good for about a year then it was time for another change. He tried to increase the amount I was getting plus make it 4 times daily. Turns out, no matter how he wrote it, I was taking the max of oxycontin allowed. So I just stayed with what I had but 4 times daily. Now it's time for another change to either a totally different med or adding a breakthrough again. There was a couple comments in regards to MS Contin though and it sounds like it may be worth a try. I was concerned about the suppressed breathing but surely it can't be worse than Oxycontin? I had sleep apnea before I started taking pain meds and it is some scarey sh*t to stop breathing. I have a machine but only used it for about 3 months because of my mouth, throat and sinus drying out. Tried the cool humidifier and warm but neither helped.
Anyway, sounds to me like the change of base ingredients may be what the doc should order. It sounds like going from Oxy to MS will work, plus hopefully be able to start at a lower dose.
In the last 4 weeks I've gone from being pain free to aching all over now plus continuously feeling like I have the flu. Not fun.
As usual, I make myself suffer through being like this when it comes around and a lot longer than 4 weeks. This time I decided I'm not going to try and prove I can take the pain so I have an appointment for Friday.. My brothers and I use to have this saying. "You have to get hurt every now and then just to prove you can still take it." lol

Anyway, I'm just saying, if you have back pain and haven't visited a chiropractor you should. They can't fix everyone's problems and if your back is too serious they won't even try working on you.

Narcotics may help in the beginning but they will trick your bady VERY quickly and prevent thwe muscle buildup and bone healing necessary to truly heal you.
I became addicted to Oxycodone years later and getting off them was WAY WAY harder than dealing with my back pain. That drug is the most evil poison I have ever known. It will kill your soul. walking zombie stuff. Getting off requires spiritual, physical and mental challenges that I would not wish on my worst enemy.
Believe in your bodies ability to heal itself, push yourself to do physical things even though painful. The pain signals the body to start the healing process. Western medicine was NOT the answer for me.

Hi
I have never used Oxycontin but do use MS Contin with good results, I have used Endone and Panadeine Forte which made me feel sick after a time and did not work.
Ms Contin is a time delayed dose of Morphine but unlike other Morphine related drugs does not give you a 'high' and works well over a longer period of time.
I have suffered with severe Back Pain over a 10 year period and that was when I was first introduced to Panadeine Forte, then Endone,, that both gave me side effects, like hot flushes and itching, they also made me feel sick and when they wore off to a degree gave me headaches. I have had none of this with MS Condin, I had a nasty fall before taking the MS Condin which added to my backpain and it was discoved I had a Crucial Ligament Tear in my left knee from the fall. I can function well, the pain does not worry me near as much and it does not interfere with a normal appetite. I do not think nor does my Doctor that I have become addicted, as some days I do not have to take them. I lost weight on Panadeine Forte to quite a dangerous level, same with Endone because I lost my appetite, not with the MS Condin. I guess you have to take what suits, painwise and weightwise.
Hope this helps

There seems to be a lot of confusion here. Which is stronger, morphine or oxycodone? The answer is morphine. Morphine is in fact 2x stronger than oxycodone. Oxycodone is more orally active, so it has a significantly higher bioavailability compared to morphine. However, when both drugs are given to an individual in a way that will provide 100% of the morphine or oxycodone, it takes less morphine to produce more powerful analgesia. 10 mg of IV morphine is equal to 20 mg of IV oxycodone, making morphine the more potent/stronger drug.
Research papers have indicated that morphine provides superior analgesia to oxycodone, but at a risk of more side effects and a higher dependence liability. Morphine was discovered in 1804 and until today no other drug has proven itself superior to it in providing analgesia. Morphine can dull even the most severe of pains and agonizing suffering imaginable. You cannot say the same for oxycodone. Not saying that oxycodone is not a good painkiller, in fact, it is a superb painkiller but it just isn't on the same level as morphine.
The closest opiates to morphine are its ester salts and they are the only opiates comparable to morphine. First there is "heroin" which is really called morphine diacetate and is a morphine prodrug. Then there are nicomorphine (morphine dinicotinate), dipropanoylmorphine (morphine dipropionate), dibenzoylmorphine and acetylpropionylmorphine.
Next in line to being closest to morphine are hydromorphinol, desomorphine, dihydromorphine, 6-monoacetylmorphine, azidomorphine, methyldesorphine, 2,4 dinitrophenylmorphine and methyldihydromorphine.

Oxycontin is oxycodone, straight up while MS Contin is morphine. Both prescribed the same as every 12 hours or on some occasions, every 8 hours or 3X a day. Both are not usually prescribed for short term use. I have used both & have always preferred oxycodone in any form & not so much morphine which is why I take the MS Contin.....to help reduce tolerance because I take less. Oxycodone is stronger, but they make many strengths.MS Contin comes in 15, 30, 60, 100 & 200mgs, the latter 2 are for opiate tolerant patients only. Oxycontin comes is 10, 20, 40, 60 & 160mgs. I have taken MS Contin 30 mg almost 3 years for kidney stone pain & to help pass them easier. I went from 2Xs a day to 3, but I don't always take 3 and if I'm up all night and in excessive pain, I can take a 4th, but I take nothing short acting for break through pain. They work like a charm with little to no side effects once you get used to them. Oxycontin has more side effects. The constipation can be beat with high fiber diet, LOTS of water & if need be, a stool softener like Colace. Your best bet however, it to try both for a substantial amount of time & decide for yourself which is best:-)
Oxycotin and oxycodone are two different animals... Oxycodone is the same as percocet wheras Oxcotin is much closer to the chemical makeup of Dilaudid making it stronger then Morphine or MS cotin by ten times the strength Oxycodone is not however stronger then ms cotin although it relatively close a good way of thinking about this is you stated that oxycotin comes in 160 mg tablets whereas oxycodone only comes up to 15 mg tablets before they decide to put you on MS cotin the next higher level.. I am not a drug addict just happen to work in an emergency room
oxycodone is the actual drug and oxycontin is slow release(12 hour) oxycodone. this is the drug that is also contained in percocet along with acetaminophene (5mg/325mg). dilaudid is hydromorphone. all of these drugs are narcotic opiate analgesics. some opiates are synthetic, but not all
