THANK YOU!! I have been on Paxil and Synthroid for about 3 years now after breast cancer and full hysterectomy. I'm as big as a HOUSE. I was big but never like this. I swear I could SEE my stomach expanding :-) Came off the Synthroid about 3 weeks ago and I feel fabulous and have lost some weight! Thank you for sharing. It's nice to know it's not all in my head :-)

Yes, Synthroid (levothyroxine) can cause weight gain. I am certain of it. I had developed hypothyroidism 14 years ago as a side effect of radiation treatments. My doctor put me on a minimal dosage, and initially, I lost some weight. But as the years went by, doctors kept elevating my dosage, which eventually reached 200 mcg. When this much higher dose was prescribed, about 5 years ago, I suddenly and rapidly began to gain weight. I was taking no other medication, so I eventually deduced that the Synthroid was the culprit. I was right. I stopped taking it and the weight disappeared.

Then, about 2 years ago I decided to start taking it again, out of fear that I was doing my body harm by not taking it. Once again, the pounds packed on. I am a normally 130-135 lb. 5'7 woman, who recently stepped on a scale and was astonished and horrified:173 pounds. I am no lazy couch potato either, I hike 5 miles every weekday. So I am stopping the Synthroid again. I have heard many a doctor say this medication will not cause weight gain. They are wrong, and I suspect the reason they believe this is because there has not been enough research done on long-term Synthroid use.

I am also experiencing the weight gain & bloating. My father also had a similar experience too with his medication. He was hyperthyroid when he was younger & meds put him into hypo & then he gained so much weight. He has always been a thin, medium framed man. I am not feeling comfortable with the bloating & my back is hurting. Now Dr. wants me to join a medical weight management program. I am not an over eater. I am not a snacker. I need help. I want to stop the thyroid also.

Can you please elaborate on how I might increase my thyroid hormone production without taking Synthroid? I was prescribed 50 micrograms daily, but am scared to take it due to reading about all of the nightmare side effects. Other than thru a blood screening, I have NO physical symptoms of hypothyroidism. I run 50 miles/ week, am involved in many things, sleep well, eat well... why should I take Synthroid if I FEEL totally normal? I am a 41 year old female and don't want to change anything if I am feeling healthy. Please advise.

I have been on synthroid for over a year and a 1/2 now. I was put on it as a last try for weight loss. (even though it says dont use it for that) well in the 1st 4 weeks I gained over 10 lbs. I had changed nothing from that point my dr told me to go on a 1200 cal diet and work out 7 days a week 1 hour a day during the week and 3 hours on staurday and 3 hours on sunday. well I did this and I gained more weight not just weight but size too I went up another pant size. I started out at 345 then went up to 370 I got prego dropped down to 360 by the end of the 9 months my blood work was showing my TSH lvls as over active and my weight was at 374 after I had the baby I went down to 349 and now I am back up to 356 (baby is 11 weeks old) I never stopped the meds while I was prego I was told I could not stop them because if my dr put me on them then I must need them even though the blood work showed i did not. And all my dr can tell me is eat less work out more and "you know it can be done look at the people on the biggest loser" (this coming from a woman who is 5 foot 4 and maybe 95 lbs) I know it can be done I did it before but I am not willing to do it the way I did it last time (not eating) It is so depressing

I did read before that synthroid is a light steroid. So if you aren't builind muscle it could just cause you to gain weight (like a regualr steroid would) or some people could just be gaining a bit of muscle from the steroid aspect of the drug. Maybe it would be better to measure yourself instead of using a scale? This way if it is muscle you are putting on it won't be as confusing. Or better yet if you try working out for a month or 2 and see if you gain muscle fairly quickly and easily?
Let me know! I just started taking this medication, but have been researching it for a long time as my mother has been on it for a while.

I STOPPED MY SYNTHROID ON MY OWN 2 1/2 MONTHS AGO AND LOST 9 LBS ALREADY. I'VE BEEN ON SYNTHROID SINCE 2005 AND SLOWLY GAINED WEIGHT (MOSTLY IN THE STOMACH). ASK FOR CYTOMEL (t3). I WAS ON BOTH SYNTHROID AND CYTOMEL FOR HYPOTHYROIDISM AND NOW I ONLY TAKE THE CYTOMEL, WHICH IS SUPPOSE TO BE LIKE A BLAST FURNACE TO YOUR BODY AND SKYROCKET YOUR METABOLISM AND IT DOES INDEED DO JUST THAT. WHILE BEING ON BOTH SYNTHROID AND CYTOMEL I NEVER FELT THE EFFECTS OF CYTOMEL BECAUSE (AS I READ NOW) THE SYNTHROID BLOCKS THE ABSORBTION OF THE CYTOMEL AND IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED THEY BE TAKEN AT THE SAME TIME...FUNNY MY DOCTOR NEVER MENTIONED THAT TO ME. SO, ON MY OWN, 2 1/2 MONTHS AGO I STOPPED MY SYNTHROID AND ONLY TAKE THE CYTOMEL. AGAIN, I ALREADY LOST 9 LBS WITHOUT EVEN EXERCISING...IT IS JUST COMING OFF. MY STOMACH IS GOING WAY DOWN TOO. T4 (SYNTHROID) IS CONVERTED INTO T3 (CYTOMEL) ANYWAY, SO WHAT IS THE POINT OF TAKING A T4? THERE IS NO POINT. THE T3 IS THE HORMONE THAT CONTROLS YOUR METABOLISM. ASK ASK ASK FOR CYTOMEL. ALSO, AS I READ ON AND ON ABOUT IT, I AM FINDING THAT ALOT OF PEOPLE ARE ONLY ON CYTOMEL FOR THEIR HYPOTHYROIDISM...NOTHING ELSE. IT CAN BE USED TO TREAT HYPOTHYROIDISM ALONE, BY ITSELF. ALOT OF DOCTORS WILL TELL YOU BS LIKE "T4 (SYNTHROID) IS CONVERTED INTO T3(CYTOMEL) SO CYTOMEL IS NOT NEEDED...WHEN IN FACT MOST HYPOTHYROID PATIENTS CAN NOT MAKE THAT CONVERSION...T3 IS WHAT YOU NEED...NOT IN COMBINATION WITH T4...JUST T3 BY ITSELF!!!!

Read your post about gaining weight while being on synthyroid. I am having similar results with Thyrosense -- gaining abdominal weight, ankle swellling and muscle aches, constipated, much flatulance. What can I do as I know I have hypothyroidism as I get very cold hands and feet. I was taking iodine drops which helped but after dental cleaning everything in my system went crazy -- eyes became puffy and sticky, gums were so sore, muscles ached so much, developed environmental sensitivities and nothing helped -- Thyrosense helped for a few days but am now very constipated and bloated and uncomfortable. I also have lipomas which I thought was due to hypothyroidism.

I am in total agreement!!!!! I have been on synthroid for 2 years now. I have gained 20 pounds and just chalked it up to a "40"'s weight gain and enjoying food but ironically I ran out of my meds about 10 days ago with no refills on my prescription, I forgot all about it but jumped on the scale yesterday and I have lost 3 1/2 pounds without even trying!! I am not saying to stop taking your medication but I am going to do more research on this and maybe go the nautral way!

Hi Everyone,

I have been on Synthroid for Hypothyroidism for almost a Year, I was started off on 0.025 n then 0.050 and now its 0.075. I gained 10 Lbs in last 3 months or so. now that my TSH is balanced, I should be able to Lose those extra 10 Lbs, But my problem is that despite of my killing efforts ( I workout everyday for an hour early in the morning, eat a sensible diet without starving myself, take 2 fish oil capsules, and a Multivitamin) I havent lost one single pound in over a month. I need to see atleast some weight coming off to keep myself motivated. I am going back home in a months time and will be meeting my husband's extended family for the first time, Iam very excited abt that, but since I have never been overweight, I am not liking my body atall.

Am i missing something in my efforts to lose weight, or is it something to do my TSH again...Can some symptoms be still there despite of normal TSH,,,I am taking my pill very religiously every morning.

Please Help me out

thanks

Hi Everyone:
I had a thyroidectomy a year ago and I have been doing fine on levothroid, 0.125mg. I have not gained any weight at all. Have you all tried any other medications. Could it be that your doctor needs to try something else for you. I was originally told that it might take many months to find the right med and the right dosage. I hope this helps. Let us know what you find out.

I'm in the same boat here. I've been using Synthroid for about 5 weeks. I started a vigourous exercise program and went from 193 to 182 in 2 weeks. Then the Synthroid kicked in. I was actually doing more cardio and eating stricter and I shot up to 187 and have been there the last 2 weeks. I just had my blood checked and should have results by Tuesday. Regardless of what the Doc says, I'm done with this stuff. I actually feel worse now than when I started taking Synthroid.
