I just had one on my left ear looked at yesterday. I thought it was a pimple at first and tried to pop it, but it wouldn't budge.
I went to the doctor and he said it wasn't even big enough for him to lance open, so he just injected it with a steroid to get the inflammation down and prescribed me Tetracycline to kill the infection and to get the oil produced by my sebaceous (sp?) gland under control.
And no more talk of tumors, guys. People like me get on here and read that stuff and we freak out.
The best advice is to get to the doctor as soon as you notice the bump. It makes removal easier and prevents a visit to the dermatologist or a plastic surgeon.

It amazes me how some people know alot about nothing. These are sebatious cysts that occurr in the earlobes, as well as behind the ears. They have nothing to do with bad hygeine. These run in families of some people.
At age 12 , I had 20-30 removed from each earlobe as well as most of my earlobe material. Unfortunately, they always appear elsewhere on the ear lobe or behind the ear. I've had so many taken out by general surgeons, that finally most of my right earlobe was removed and a new earlobe made by a plastic surgeon. I've had them behing my ears as long as I can remember. Drawing salve will just make them swell with pus. When they flare up, either you let it run the course until the flare up subsideds, usually after it breaks open, or you have them lanced. Either way, they always come back.

I have a lump inside my left ear lobe that is fairly small and hurts to be touched. I'm 13 and I've never had a piercing before. Does anybody have any idea what the lump is?

It started out as a pimple type bump behind my left earlobe. I didn't touch it, and it ended up growing to a large squishy lump. I eventually popped it myself and green, white, and red came out. (Lots of blood and puss and bile).
Over the next few days, blood and puss would still come out and my ear lobe was all messed up looking. It was cool for a while. It scabbed and healed up just like a popped pimple.
About 2 months later it came back and my girlfriend made me go see a doctor. I hate doctors. But they looked at it and asked me if I was in any pain. I said no. They said, "since there is no pain, you need to go to a plastic surgeon for elective surgery."
I was like, "yo can you just lance it and help me out?"
They said, "no" and they made me come back a week later. I hate doctors. When I came back, I was like, "just pop it please!"
They lanced it for me, which is just a fancy word for jab with needle. Madd nasty red and white stuff came out. It just flowed right out.
But my ear was left with some puss still inside. Some pimple stuff that I could sqeeze out on my own. I still get it sometimes, but I just use a needle and disinfection liquid from CVS. Its madd simple to do by yourself. In the end, I came to the conclusion that there is some puss that gets trapped in the ear lobe and it can grow and become infected. See a doctor to make sure its not cancer. If its not, just jab a needle through one side of your ear lobe and lance the hell out of that junk.
I hope this helped. :-D

I just went to the doctor about the same thing, a small lump in my right earlobe. She said it was a "Sebaceous Cyst" and that it would be okay, but maybe get bigger, and sometimes get irritated and cause minor discomfort. She said i could get it removed also if it bothered me. At this point, I'm so obsessed with it, I made an appointment to get it removed. She said it was a minor procedure with local anesthetic and would only take about 15 minutes. We'll see!

hi. i have had this ball in my ear before. i popped it about a month ago. no fluids came out it just seemed like it teared something inside my ear lobe and moved to a different spot. now if i squeeze my ear lobe softly i can transfer the liquid inside from cavity to cavity. recently it has moved toward where my earlobe is connected to my face and hurts very bad. if i leave it alone for about 2-3 days it almost dissapears. and washing the area more than 2 times a day helps further swelling and infection. i always find myself trying to pop it or playing with it, which just makes it worse. so try your best NOT TO TOUCH IT and let it be. if it returns over and over you HAVE to see your doctor, which is what i will do; when i get around to it.

The lump in the earlobe is a keliod scar. I just had mine removed by my dermatologist. He said they have a chance at growing back but we removed it anyways as it was starting to be painful. He put a shot of Novocaine in my earlobe and then took these scissor type surgical things and cut this hard round whitish/ see-thrush ball out of my earlobe. He then cauterized the back of my ear and stuck a post earing in it and advised me not to remove it for 6 weeks and to twist the earring daily and to apply triple antibiotic ointment on it several times a day and come back to make sure all is well in about 6 weeks. Initial needle hurt like crazy but didn't feel anything else.

Ok, I'm quite the expert on these now, having been plagued with them for the past 5 or so years.
They are called sebaceous/epidermal/keratin cysts. I have about 8-9 in one ear lobe, and 3-4 in the other. They range from tiny (perhaps the size of a pin head) to about the size of a pea. Most of the time they lay "dormant" - that is they aren't noticable and don't cause me any bother. Sometimes if they are squeezed in this state (which I rarely do because it just aggravates them and increases the chance of infection) they emit a waxy white substance.
The fun begins once they get infected. I have about 2-3 that seem prone to infection, the others seem to always remain "dormant". As far as I am aware there is nothing you can do to prevent them getting infected. I am a very hygenic person, and I avoid fiddling with them, yet they still get infected. It usually happens about every 3-4months for me. I can tell when they are getting infected because they get slightly larger, and a bit more sore. The next day they get even more sore and reach what I call the 'tipping point'. This means a) my body will handle the infection and it will start to go down again, or more likely b) it will get fully infected and MUCH bigger.
The symptoms of it being fully infected are; inflamed, very red and possibly purple, very sore - even without touching somethimes.
Now I have three steps of dealing with these;
Firstly I get to the doctor ASAP for some antibiotics. It's always Flucoxacillin for me. I actually have a special arrangement with my doctor whereby I can ring him and he will just write out the prescription straight away (im in UK, not sure how it works elsewhere?). The reason its important to start taking the antibiotics quickly is that they take 48hrs to kick in, and it seems that treament via antibiotics is fairly futile once the cyst gets fully infected. Nevertheless I think its not too bad of an idea to take a course of antibiotics if you have an infection.
The second step is to basically hope it will pop on its own accord. I have found interefering and trying to squeeze them just aggravates it and puts you through more pain. Giving it a gentle nudge every so often is fine though, and sometimes this results in a messily satisfying explosion of puss and blood :-D. Let me note though - they seem to go through phases - the first 2 days it will feel hard to the touch and at this point I wouldnt even attempt to drain it. After a day or two it becomes a bit more squishy :-D and ready to drain. I read of people performing a lancing procedure themself with a razor blade but I would thoroughy reccomend against this. ESPECIALLY IF IT IS LOCATED NEAR YOUR NECK. I have one at the base of my earlobe where it joins the neck, and even the nurse in the hospital refused to do that one and referred me to the doctor (I think this is because there is a massive amount of nerves around there - hence the immense pain when it swells!)
The third step is go to the doctor and get them to lance it for you. I normally do this after about 4-5 days if its still not going anywhere. I have probally had it done about 5-6 times now. They tend to inject a local anasthetic to numb the area. This can be VERY painful (although shortlived...the anasthetic will kick in less than a minute) because they are injecting even more fluid into a very swollen area. They then make a small incision and all the blood and puss comes pouring out. Most nurses/doctors actually seem to enjoy doing these! :-D They then usually just bandage it up and send your on the way. My ear lobe tends to remain swollen for a another day or two and then its back to normal, until the next time >:( ! Sometimes they have to pack the wound with gauze and you have to get it redressed the next day.
Note - this is not the removal of the actual cyst, this is just them draining the infection. I might one day get them removed, but considering I have 9 in one earlobe it might be pretty pointless because my earlobe may end up looking disfigured, and im obviously prone to them so they will probally just come back.
Its just something I'm blessed with...haha...believe me to anyone who has this - I know how it feels to walk around with a massively swollen earlobe. Now I just tend to whack a massive plaster over it and if anyone asks just say its an 'ear infection' which sounds mildly better than 'infected sabaceous cyst'. Also the plaster makes out that its a temporary thing....rather than people just looking at my enourmously swollen earlobe and thinking to themself...."is that normal..?" haha. Call me vain, but I'm a student...and a swollen earlobe definitely isnt cool!

I've had mine for around two years but it has never gotten as big as it has today. You could barely notice it before, it was not even like the size of a air soft pellet, but now its huge and it's on the back of my earlobe, instead of the front. I have an appointment with my doctor on Monday but I don't want to wait that long :[ It's purplish and really disgusting, I just hope they can cut it out & drain it instead of giving me medications, I don't care about scarring cause it wouldn't even be visible. It's so nasty!

My gf has a strange thing happening on here ear right now. It seems to be something like these cysts that you guys are describing but not exactly. Attempts to pierce/drain it have been unsuccessful. No pus or blood or anything comes out when we've stuck a needle into it. It feels like a rock-hard little pea deep under the skin of the earlobe. Peeling the top, sort of scabby layer of skin off of it reveals a red, sore, tender skin underneath. When we apply peroxide to this skin it whites and bubbles vigorously and there's an intense burning sensation. Any ideas/suggestions beyond more peroxide or a visit to the doctor?
