Dr. Norman also did my surgery in October 2007. He pulled out a double adenoma. I was really sick....neuromuscular weakness (felt like rubbery legs when I moved around), fatigue, muscle aches and pains. Weeks after the surgery I was doing pretty good. Not 100% but maybe 80%. This lasted 6 months. The last ten days, the neuromuscular weakness has been plaguing me badly. ........so, it seems from what I'm reading, not all people have such a great recovery as is posted on Dr. Norman's website. Those people must be the lucky ones.
I too am waiting to heal! Anyone else out there waiting to heal???

No where near good![ It's been 2 weeks now that I feel crappy - weekness, poor muscular endurance. Why was I better then this for the first 6 months after surgery?
How are things with you lately?

Hi, I have good days and bad days, but not as bad before surgery. I have no bone pain, but my energy level is still low. Almost six weeks.
I take 2 Citracal with vitamin D daily and mutiple vitamin. I am going to change my vitamins next week to see if that helps. I just had labs this week and don't know the results yet, but I so hope calcium is normal. I was a rare case as i never had a high PTH level. My pre-op PTH was 16 and my calcium was 11.5. When they told me hyperplasia I was so shocked. I am 62 and I wasted so many years thinking I would get better. Have you seen a endocrinologist with these new symptoms? I hope yours is better than mine. Please keep me posted on your condition.

When is the last time you had lab work done? I don't understand the path report. Did you contact the dr's office about this? I would. My calcium is 400 IU of VIT D and 630mg of calcium. I am sure you should be taking some calcium. I don't know about magnesium.

I'm also a rare case...my serum calcium was at the high end of normal, never elevated. It was my ionized calcium that was high with a PTH anywhere from 49 to 70. These numbers didn't convince any endochronolologist that it was hyperparathyroidism. Dr. Norman made the diagnosis. Low and behold....this was a double adenoma.
I too had labs this week. I'll keep you posted. Please do the same for me.

My endocronologist is no good either...I'm actually seeing a GP who is more with it. He wasn't sure what to think about the pathologist report that came in though. I emailed Dr. Norman about it and he said my remaining 2 glands were perfect. So.....who's right? Pathology? Norman? Please keep in touch.

You know I would believe Dr Norman, because he checks the other glands during surgery. I just don't think he would skip over one. I wasn't sure if they sent the parathyroid tumors to path or not as my billing was just for my thyroid nodule he removed. It looks like you are a rare bird like me with normal PTH levels. I am interested in knowing your levels when you get reports back. Both calcium levels for me were high and higher before surgery. This is so nice to have someone to talk with regarding this disease as most people don't know about the disease or could care less...lol..keep your chin up better days ahead.

You're so right, it's nice to talk to someone who knows and cares. Did Dr. Norman ever tell you what to expect post surgery? Any explanation to why your calcium levels were still high after surgery?

Loading...

You know I never ask about post surgery. I had read all the good reports people had posted on his web site. I was to take calcium and mutiple vitamins. I had my labs at 5 weeks as instructed and am still awaiting the results. If calcium is normal i guess I am cured. I sure hope so as i just have the one parathyroid gland left. They only gave me 80% that all my symptoms would go away. Considering the shape I had been in that sounded wonderful to me. I still have few aches and pain, but not the intense bone pain I had before surgery. I am concerned about your muscle weakness. Any chance you are on the med Lipitor or some drug like that. That is what happen to me when i took the drug. It was devastating. I thought I was going to die. I could not walk. depressed. I would certainly look at my meds. How high is your calcium? Was you calcium normal until recently? What does the GP say?

Loading...

No I'm not on Lipitor or any meds. It's a weakening muscle fatigue, where they seem to loose power- most notibly in my legs. It was by far my WORST symptom pre-surgery. It was really good for the longest time then, the last 2 weeks were bad again. Although, the last 2 days I seem to be gradually progressing again.

I'm taking your advice and started my Citracal again - 3 a day. Do you really think a multi-vitamin would be worth while too?

It will be 2-3 weeks before I get any labs back. My GP is waiting on these labs before giving me any guidance.

Loading...

Hi there, you know I wouldn't take three Citracal unless your doctor recommended it. Dr Norman told me to take two forever because of my osteoporosis and the daily multi vitamin. i have been taking Wal mart brand of vitamins and I am switching to Centrum silver this week. Like all things you get what you pay for...lol..Glad to hear you feeling somewhat better. Stay in touch.

Loading...

Well 6 weeks post op and my lab results are not good. Calcium high at 10.2 and my PTH 9. Low Vitamin D. Blood Pressure all over the place. Guess I am not cured. Bummer..I wish Dr Norman would include post op info on website. What to do now?

Loading...

Well, you are on calcium supplements, and 10.2 is lower than you were, yes? A PTH of 9 is low, too, assuming that yours was high to start with.

Somewhere on that site (though I can't find it now) it does say that it can take up to three months for your hormones to rebalance.

I don't think I'd panic yet (of course, if my bloodwork comes back like yours, I probably will so I do understand). But I think the PTH being low and the calcium being high-end of normal is probably better than it was - no?

Loading...

You know I think I am on a pity party today..lol..pre surgery my calcium was 11.5 and PTH 16. I had hyperplasia and three tumors removed. I fall in that 2% of rare birds. I had read the website so much I guess I just had BIG expectations. At least there is no bone pain. thanks for your post.
