I am wondering about people that mix Lememir with other insulin during the day.  WHy would they do that or why would the doctor order this because isn't Levemir suppose to take care of the whole day of insulin needs?  It seems like overkill to have to have more insulin on top of insulin.  Couldn't that be dangerous too when you are taking too much insulin that can cause hypoglycemia?  I know I would be worried about that.  I take Levemir once a day and it takes care of everything and I don't need extra insulin.  If I did, couldn't the dosage of Levemir just be increased so that it takes care of the high blood sugars?  I keep telling my friend to ask her doctor about taking all of the insulin she is taking.  I don't think it is healthy for her to be on so many injections a day.  She has to poke herslef all the time between checking her bg and giving herself insulin shots.  I think she should only be on one injection.

Lememir is a long-acting insulin that works over the course of 24 hours.  This will pretty much take care of many of the spikes of blood sugar that occurs over the course of a day.  Some diabetics need to have a little extra help at certain points of the day.  This is when they may take a rapid-acting insulin before meals if the meals cause hyperglycemia for them.  Some other diabetics may take a slower-acting one if it would work better for their insulin therapy.  Lememir cannot take care of these random periods of the day.  If you increase the dose, it could lead to hypoglycemia in many parts of the day for the diabetic.  I hope this clears up the issue of why a person may need so many shots during the day.
