Hi, my mother has mental problems, and after many test being done, her doctor is now suspecting a pituitary tumor. What is this condition like? What is it’s cause?

Like any other tumor a pituitary tumor is an abnormal growth of malignant cells in the pituitary gland. Pituitary gland is pea-sized endocrine gland, located in brain and it’s role is to regulate the body's secretion of hormones. If a pituitary tumor produces huge amounts of hormones, the result may be giantism or acromegaly (excess growth hormone), hyperthyroidism (excess thyroid stimulating hormone), Cushing's syndrome (excess adrenocorticotropic hormone) breast enlargement (excess prolactin). In case of underproduction of hormones occurs hypopituitarism. The causes of pituitary tumors remains unknown, although it can be a part of a hereditary disorder called multiple endocrine neoplasia.
