Two weeks ago I slipped and fell off the stairs in my house hurting my back. I took some painkillers to ease the pain (ibuprofen 600 mg), I thought it would go away by itself but it didn’t. I feel strong pain in the right side of my upper back extending to my arm, sometimes it hurts so much that I can’t move my arm at all, I also have difficulties turning to the right when I'm sitting up straight, painkillers make it easier but after they ware off the pain increases again. Please help, any advice would be appreciated.

I'm afraid that you might have hurt your back badly, judging by the location of the pain I’d say that this is a case of thoracic disc herniation. Other possibility would have been a swelling pressing on some of your nerves but since it happened a long time ago the swelling had time to drop – the pain didn’t go away so it’ more likely to be thoracic discus hernia. During your accident one of your vertebral discus probably ruptured and parts of it are pressing against the spinal cord and the spinal nerves – that’s where the back pain comes from. This is a serious situation that may require surgical treatment, but before doing anything a doctor will probably take some X-rays or MRI and other tests to get a more accurate diagnosis. If the damage to the intervertebral discus isn’t big conservative treatment should be considered. You should definitely consult your doctor orthopedist or neurosurgeon for further treatment as soon as possible since this is a very dangerous situation that can leave you even paralyzed.

Hi. I work for a chiropractor and we see many people that come into the office that I work at with problems like yours. I would go see a chiropractor before a general practitioner because this is what chiropractors specialized in. If they can't help you, they can certainly refer you to someone that might could, like a neurosurgeon. Many people are skeptical about chiropractic treatment, but it is a great non evasive way to possibly take care of your problem. A whole lot cheaper than surgery too! :-D

I would still visit a MD in this perticular situation. The man isn't suffering from stress, or bent over to pick up a box and hurt his back. He fell down a flight of stairs. Something could be broken or fractured. His first stop should be with an MD.

I agree, go to the MD first. I herniated 2 discs in my back and went to a chiropractor first. I should have gone directly to the MD. I almost was paralyzed. I was told after my surgery that they had to sew my spinal cord because it was leaking fluid. Don't take any chances with this type of problem. Best of luck to you.

Without an MRI a chiropracter is simply guessing what is wrong and do serious damage. I had a herniated disk with fuild leaking into the spinal column and the chiropracter insisted I not get an MRI blah blah blah. Got it and he was treating the wrong discs and everything.
