I had a tonsillectomy on April 22nd of this year. I was told pre and post-op that by now I would've forgotten all about the procedure including the side effects, and that I would be 100%. This has not been the case. I have found postings from folks who are months out of the procedure and still have the following symptoms. Can someone tell me if they eventually improved (disappeared?), and in how much time? Any idea what causes it? And please, please tell me I am not permanently damaged?!? If anyone has links to articles about it or further information, that would also be useful.

Symptoms well after surgery:

1) taste buds are a disaster--nothing (nothing) tastes good or right. Bread products are the worst. Sweet foods are disgusting. Salty is the best bet but doesn't taste right

2) Bad taste in my mouth--constant. This was intense week 2 post-op and the taste is the same, just less. I thought it came from the scabs, but I don't have scabs anymore to my knowledge, so...?

3) A lump-like feeling in my throat. My speech is impaired because my throat "sticks" together when I am speaking and I have to stop, swallow, and try again.

4) A cold/metallic feeling in my throat some of the time.

I am guessing that all of your symptoms may have been the after effects of the anesthetic used during the surgery.

I am now just over 4 months post op - I have been searching high and low for a solution and the only thing that has helped to restore my taste to around 70% is Acupuncture - this needs to be performed by a qualified experienced acupuncturist.

I am so grateful for this post because I thought I was going crazy! I thought the heavy meds were to blame but I am 2 wks post-op , stopped meds a wk ago and nothing has real flavour. It's very depressing to hear this can go on for months. I will seek out any remedy possible for this so pls suggest any and all recommendations! Thank you again.
