I experience this too and i think it is from sleeping weird. Similar to a kink in your neck, but in your sternum. It usually comes on suddenly and goes away on its own in a day or two. If i get a good crack out of it I am happy though! :)

I also have this problem with tightness around my sternum and collar bones. I once had a message therapist use a technique to loosen the joints around my sternum which felt absolutely amazing. It made my chest, shoulders, and back feel good again. It relieved a lot of pain! The issue seemed resolved and I was pain free for 3-4 months. This guy was very good. He was the message therapist for the University's football team. Unfortunately, he retired and nobody else seems to know what to do. It's very frustrating because I know the relief that is available.

FYI this physical therapist explained to me that the issue was caused by the muscles across the front of my chest and shoulders being too tight. This also causes your upperback to knot/tense up to counteract. A good indicator of this is to stand up straight with your arms completely relaxed. If this is the problem your palms hang suspended in front of your thighs, thumbs pointing towards each other. They should be touching the side of your thighs, thumbs pointing forward. Stretch until this occurs. Exercises that strengthen the upper back will also be helpful.

I've never had this issue until a run in with nearly fatal pneumonia. Now I have asthma and a severe chest cracking issue. Not hard to believe asrhma or lung issues may have something ro do with it

Could be costochondritis. I had these exact same symptoms, went to the ER worried about my heart, but they could tell from an X-ray I had this condition, brought on by stress and relieved by Motrin 3 times a day for a week.

Exact same over here....not fun! I started stretching during the day. I feel like since I never get the proper "crack" needed that stretching daily might help. Still painful for over 3 weeks now....

I feel the need to share my story here....but first if any of you who have the pain on the sternum also have psoriasis you need to go and ask for an MRI scan.

2 years in I now have answers and take medication.

I have psoriatic arthritis of the sternum and pretty rare place to get it however the symptoms you all speak of are the same as mine. I will add that my pain was extreme....and I mean EXTREME. I take steroids for the pain without them I couldn't function..I am weening off them now though as I have been put on a DMARD drug called methotrexate and this decision to accept a chemo drug was not taken lightly, I am desperate.

My message is for those folk that have psoriasis of the skin you could also have psoriasis of the bone/joint so it's worth getting it looked at :)

Good luck x

Hi guys, I FOUND THE EASIEST WAY TO POP THE STERNUM!

I've been tortured by this feeling of not being able to pop it , trying everything I could. Then, today, I asked a friend to stand perpendicular to me (so his shoulder would face my chest directly). then I wrapped my arms around his body, so that my fingers would meet and the moment I started squeezing, the pop happened and I felt better instantly.

Try this and see if it works for you!

Hi. I know this may be old. But I thought I could help. I'm 29 now. My chest first popped when I was in grade 9 social studies. Just leaned back and boom. Stopped for a few years. And when I was 20 it popped again. Over the next few years it started popping more and more. But I started to enjoy it so I would make it happen. And around 26 it started to pop in different areas. Like my upper sternum. Lower. There was a time though when I would pop it and it would reset my chest it would feel like. Until I popped it again. Just last week was the bottom of my sternum. Once I was gaming for an hour. Moved and had the biggest pop I've had period. I thought I broke something. Anyway. Just wanted to let anyone who was wondering know. That it's normal. And I do it out of pleasure many times a day for years now. And it still pops in different areas.

I have had this going on with me for 8 years now. For a while (up to 5 years) the crack felt good. It was great to relieve the pressure. But let me tell you. I don't know if "it's" starting to evolve or what but he'll, it's so painful. It feels good for about 2 seconds and then it's like my breathe is being taken away. I get a terrible pain directly behind where it cracks across to my spine in my back. Maybe it is cartlidge Enflamed all over now. I know a lot of people probably don't want to hear this. I moved to Colorado and went to a dispensary and purchased cannabis. Different candies and even tried the herbs. It helps a lot with the pain. It does not affect me when I drive or at work. It's so normal to me now that I don't know what I would do without it. You don't have to smoke the marijuana. There's thousands of kinds of full meals and candys and drinks and salves creams ointment. I highly recommend to try.
