I just started with this whole, pain in the chest and cracking. I am so surpirsed to see how many people have the same problem as I do. At some points it hurts so bad that everymove I make I cringe in pain. The other day I was stretching and I lifted both of my hands above my head and stretched, and it cracked, it immediately relieved the pressure that was built up, but then shortly after it started up again. Right now I am starting to work out again, I played sports in high school and now that I am out Ive gotten a bit lazy, but there is now way for me to do pushups and anything to work my chest because it makes the pain much worse. It seems to be that most everyone that has written on this board has mentioned something about working out, maybe this might be the cause? strain and over working it? not sure. if anyone finds out anything, let me know! thanks!

I am releived to find out for the first time I'm not the only one whose sternum cracks. I don't believe the chest cracking phenomenon is caused by working out. I am a tall and skinny 21 year old and have been poping my sternum for the past year or two. I never work out at all. I'm leaning more toward blaming stress and/or poor posture. All day long I'm either slouched in front of a computer or slumped at a desk in class.

My sternum started cracking right after I finishished my collegiate athletic career. I lifted weights a lot in college and my chest expanded a lot due to my increased size and strength. After college, I quit lifting and lost 20 pounds in about two months. It was during this time that my chest starting hurting right in the middle. It hurt so bad I could not even do pushups. Soon after, I started pulling my arms back to relieve the pain, and the cracking started, deep in the middle of my chest. I started lifting again and the pain subsided somewhat, but now I'm a chronic "cracker." My chest needs to crack whenever I have been laying or sitting in a position for a while, where my shoulders are somewhat pulled forward. "Cracking" relieves the tension and feels just like a knuckle cracking.

I have just started working out for about two months and about two weeks ago i developed pain in what feels like my sternum. I could feel it when doing dips and thought it was just muscle but it started getting worse and now i have stopped doing dips for about two weeks and it has not gone away and is actually getting worse. I kind of feel like it has spread through to my back directly behind my sternum. it hurts when i exhale while laughing. I rarely crack my sternum. another symptom is when i lift a weight a weight on my left or right alone, my weight is off balance and it hurts in the center of my chest, if anyone has any idea what is wrong with me, and how to help it i would greatly appreciate it.

I'm right in the mix with everyone else! I'm 21, athletic (not overly), healthy, and have a chest that cracks. It started about a year ago. I'm positive that it wasn't brought on by working out or being active. I had an x-ray taken for my back, but my chiropractor couldn't see anything wrong with my sternum.

I'm constantly saying "my sternum hurts". I'm sure I'm not alone! I'm constantly pushing on it, and people look at me like I'm a complete weirdo. I haven't seen a doctor yet. I figured I'd google it first, which brings me here. Sounds like we're out of luck as far as an answer is concerned. Just what I wanted to hear! Just another reason to take my daily dose of Advil. I'm ticked. I feel like my body is falling apart joint by joint. I'm effing 21! Sheesh.

Anyhow, I just want to tell everyone that we should join a group. Not sure where or how, but obviously there are a lot of people with this problem dang-it! I'm printing this off and taking it to the doctor!

my sternum has also been popping. I have congestive heart failure, when you have CHF your heart tends to enlarge. with an enlarged heart it causes pressure on the sternum causing it to pop and hurt.

same problem 2 years ago now 19 years old. started when i was doing excessive pushups, basically upper body/ chest excercises. HOWEVER i have great posture i rarely slouch. and when i do its only b/c im tired. Ive been in the marching band for 5 years and they demand great posture not only standing but walking as well. so posture in my opionion is unrelated.

I have been having the same problem for only a short period of time. I have had an inflamed stomach and believed the problem to be due to pressure on my lungs etc from the inflamation. I tried aleve and anti inflamatories and these provided no help. Popping my chest would occur at least 10 times a day and i could feel the pressure coming back right after i would do so. However, to calm my stomach i tried a number of remedies one of which included heart burn relief medication. This medication suprisingly enough helped relieve some of the tension in my chest and helped reduce the amount of pressure and or pain that i was experiencing. This didnt altogether solve the problem however when it was occuring It at least provided some relief to the problem. Hopefully this helps some of you as it helped me

I am 22. I started experiencing pain in my sternum area about 6 months ago. I have scoliosis and went to a chiropractor in my youth until I was 17 years old. I used to weightlift religously up until about 3 years ago. On the right side of my sternum bone about two-thirds of the way up, there is a bump/knot, which I deduce is inflamed cartilidge where the rib meets the sternum. I've had that bump for as long as I can remember. So....I've always had scoliosis, a bump in my sternum, and I used to be a big weightlifter...so why does the pain start now??? My logic says its posture. In retrospect, the past 6 months I have been sitting in front of my computer at least 3-4 hours a day. And I admit, my posture is absolutely HORRIBLE. The previous explanation of poor posture and how it affects the sternum make sense wonderfully. I AM NO DOCTOR, but I believe my sternum discomfort comes MAINLY from my lazy posture. Sure...scoliosis, cartilidge inflammation, and weightlifting put pressure on the sternum thats not meant to be. But I imagine poor posture amplifies this pressure exponentially!!! I will make a concerted effort to correct my posture woes and see how my chest pains are affected, and definitely try to post my findings.

:-D I cant believe I have found this website and to find out that Im not the only person suffering from this. That alone brings comfort. I can just related to every person who has wrote in about this and what they are suffering. I havent experienced the popping thing but I find when I twist my top body I hear a grinding sound. Ive just been back to the Doctors this morning, so Im now waiting to go for an X-ray. If I think back to when it started I at the time was suffering alot with heartburn and acid reflux. I believe this has done something to my sternum. I know Im not coming up with a solution but Im just glad to discover Im not alone and I understand how everyone is feeling.

My sternum hurts too. It has for a couple of years now and I am used to it but I feel cursed. I've been told I have costochronditis. This seems like a likely explanation except that costochronditis is supposed to go away. The pain moves from right to left and to the center and to my lower back. I am a runner, I run few miles every day. I do not find that exercise aggravates the pain, but stress does. And it doesn't hurt as much as causes the sensation of great pressure, like an elephant is resting its hoof, or whatever, right on my chest. I also have these tension headaches and I feel dizzy sometimes. It's no fun to be me.

The one--and only--relief I have found was taking vitamin D (calcium). One pill, daily.

I too have had the sternum pressure and my left rib cage is chronically painful for the last 5 years. Over the years, I have been to a cardiologist, had an upper GI, MRI, rheumatologist, orthopedist, physical theapy, spine specialist, chiropractor and no one has diagnosed the problem. I have been on medication for a nerve problem, painkillers, antidepressants and nothing helps. Sitting all day at a computer does not help nor does my 2 hour commute. I am considering going to a neurologist, it seems to be the only one I have not been too.
