Hello all. My mom has been suffering from diahrea for the last three days. She hasn’t been to work or left the house since it started. Her co-worker recommended her to get some probiotics to help cure diarrhea. I would like to know what probiotics are. Thanx for your time

Probiotics are friendly bacteria that have beneficial effects on their host. Probiotic bacteria usually include include Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. casei, L. bulgaricus, L. plantarum, L. salivarius, L. rhamnosus, L. reuteri, Bifidobacterium bifidum, B. longum, B. infantis and S. thermophilus. Probiotics can balance intestinal microflora, promote good digestion, boost immune function, promote good digestion and inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria. Probiotic bacteria produce substances called bacteriocins, which act as natural antibiotics to kill undesirable microorganisms. Your mother’s co-worker recommended probiotics because diarrhea can flush intestinal microorganisms out of the gastrointestinal tract and leave the body vulnerable to infections. Probiotics may help prevent new infections.
