Sounds like your son is heading to a good start. I see no harm in your son taking protein supplements to build muscle. Just make sure that he drinks enough water to prevent dehydration. I would also recommend that you feed him healthy portions of vegetables, lean juicy steaks, pork chops, broiled skinless chicken breasts, and lobster tails to reward him for his excellence in sports.
