Ok, my son is 5. He was circumcised at 1 day old and after that healed, he's never had a problem in that area. He is potty trained, although he does have accidents at night sometimes. He showers and washes himself and has been for the last couple months. Today, he came to me and said it hurt when he went pee. So my husband looked at it and said it was very red. I looked at it and was shocked. The inside of the foreskin is bright red, the head of the penis is red too but not as bad as the foreskin. He said it hurts and hurts even more when he goes potty. We had him take a bath and my husband helped him wash really well. Could this be from not washing that area well enough after having an accident at night? Or could it be an allergy to our detergent or anything along those lines? I would appreciate anyone's opinion on this. I plan to take him to see our pediatrician tomorrow but would like an idea of what we're looking at here. Thanks!!

Hi,
Please do get this checked. Yes, it could be an allergy but it could also be a hygiene issue.
Without seeing it we can only assume. It could be an infection, maybe balanitis, or a yeast infection. Both are easily treated and fairly common.
Hope it helps.

I'm still trying to understand how something he doesn't have (a foreskin) is red and painful. You did say he was circumcised o.O
If in fact he does have a foreskin and soap is not rinsed off well after washing, the soap trapped under it against the glans can irritate the glans and the inside of the foreskin. In the nearly 3/4 of a century I have been around I have on occasion forgotten to pull my foreskin back to rinse under it after soaping up in the shower. I usually know about it within a few hours when it begins to itch and burn. >;)

It sound like he wasn't cut "tight." When he's not erect the foreskin still covers part of the glans, usually at least the corona.
