Thank you Dr. Ortega! You are 110% correct. I am only a CPhT, however we need to take our CEs and stay caught up also. I have been with my company for 12 years, my RPh now, is the best I've ever worked with (I've switched between working at corporate in pharmacy ops and the store after my husband passed away and while raising my 2 children), customers are always swearing up and down about brand vs generic and how we are not giving them the correct medication. An example from 2 days ago was a customer came in with an Rx for Percocet, we filled it with generic Roxicet because that is what we had in stock. The FDA would not allow our system to "change the medication" if it were not approved. The FDA has strict guidelines they must adhere to. You would be amazed at the amount of phone calls my RPh receives from physicians and certified nurse practioners asking about which medication is best to prescribe and what could interact with what. There may be different fillers, however the 2 main ingredients are the same and that is what matters. The only ones the physicians do not change around that I have seen is Coumadin and Synthroid, seeing as my father is on Coumadin, I appreciate that. I have taken Levothyroxine for 5 years since I was 36, and have never had an issue, in fact it obviously works because my yearly test results have kept me on 75mcg this entire time. I agree with the person that stated if you put the generic Percocet and generic Roxicet in the same bottle and just took one, you would not be able to tell which one you took. A big issue I have seen is that people take more than they are supposed to which leads to your body not responding to what your physician prescribed, they prescribe it the way they do for a reason, mainly so you do not get addicted.

Yes he is right, roxicet is pure oxycodone without Tylenol because the damage Tylenol does to your liver... I get roxi 20 mg and they help way more than a Percocet ever had, and it's like an eighth of the size, go look up grey round pill with #'s k 57 on it and see for yourself and get your facts straight

i guess it was just a placebo effect when my vision went hazy from taking generic Plaquenil or does your placebo effect only apply to opioids? Did the FDA just fine the Indian manufacturer of the generic Plaquenil I took (Ranbaxy) $500 million because they adulterated their medications with an ingredient named placebo? I looked all over on several different sites at the inactive ingredients and couldn't find it for the life of me. (for anyone who claims that Plaquenil is known for affecting patients eyes, yes i can happen but not at the beginning of therapy after being examined by an ophthalmologist, then suddenly clear up after substituting the name brand) Maybe I was spelling it wrong?

* "The joint criminal and civil settlement, which reflects many years of work by FDA agents and federal prosecutors, holds Ranbaxy accountable for a pattern of violations" (quoted from link)

* SO even though they were caught, how many units of product reached consumers (hey thats us) in the YEARS before they had enough evidence to bring forward indictments? Still claim all generics are exactly the same as name brand? Read on....
Many recalls have occurred and YES some of these have reached the consumer before recall.
Dr Reddy's blood pressure and heart medication (tachycardia for yours truly) was scary, I insist on Actavis/Watson now and have it special ordered. I guess it was coincidence too that my heart rate was running higher at doctor visits during the time I was taking Dr Reddy's metoprolol, succinate [generic for Toprol-XL (recall was of 1,356,000 pills) that's a lot of pills my friends!

SO Mr 'chemist' PLEASE, try and educate yourself before coming on here and spouting off BS like you know what the heck you are talking about.. Now, where were we, oh you said "silly demands to stop the complaining because they are in your head". If you are a chemist you don't manufacture pharmaceuticals, at least I pray you don't BUT that might make sense if you worked for a generic manufacturer and want to expound upon the 'there is no difference' dogma circulating among medical professionals who don't ACTUALLY TAKE the medicines they claim to know so much about.

Indian and Chinese drugs are flooding the market. I would request, due to the problem with the rampant corruption (India)and cost cutting measures used in (China) i form of inferior exipients, ask your pharmacist to order medications made in the United States or another trustworthy country w/ high standards [like Germany].Just too many recalls and safety violations for me to trust my health to. Some would say if the deal is too good to be true it probably is. In the case of many foreign drugs this saying is right on the money. The pharmacies shave pennies per dose, (SOMETIMES passing them on to you) at your risk, kinda like a human guinea pig. I don't like being anyone's guinea pig, do you? I stick with proven track records thank you very much.

Tolerance? Some other knucklehead was claiming the difference was related to tolerance. Trying not to post 20 x but I do wish to clear up some misinformation. While tolerance does build up to opioid pain medications it would not explain noticing a difference in one generic to another after taking the one for several years. You dont suddenly develop more 'tolerance' from day 1,000 to day 1,001 that happens to coincide with the day you switch, it takes time. One instance where generics are the same as brand is with drugs known as 'Branded generics'. They are exactly the same ie: Percocet/Endocet both made by Endo Pharmaceuticals. For the blow by blow of why generics and name brand medications are NOT the same look at the next two links below: (or keep listening to people too lazy to be bothered to read up before spouting off).

EXIPIENTS CAN INTERFERE WITH THE uptake of the active ingredients.. SO, maybe they aren't inactive ingredients after all

One well known case FDA vs Teva (Wellbutrin/Buproprion)-

Ask the RPh at any pharmacy to order it for you. If he cant or doesn't feel like it, continue your 'hunt' until you do. (or ask for Endocet, which manufactures the name brand Percocet). Good luck.

I'm pretty sure the reason why the roxicet isn't helping the pain as much as the Percocet is because of the Tylenol in the Percocet because roxicet is just pure Percocet if that helps anybody out but I would still ask a physician.

I'm going to put my 2 cents in this intriguing post. I am not giving my cred but personal experience. I have found that I have a preference for vicodin which at y current dose works fine. Historically I have been prescribed from tylenol 3 to oxycontin. For me it is psychological. This is not to say the pain is not real by any means. I jumped on this discussion and have reached the conclusion that we all need to be educated and evaluated carefully by substantial research and qualified experts who stay students of the field of medication. I was struck by the post that I read that shared a preference for generic meds but not so in the case of Oreos. For me this is one of the main issues which is simply a matter of preference. NMe any brand name item you refuse to replacebe it scot tissues or Nikes. You develop brand name cofidence. For you their is no alternative. When you are forced to change your brain scientifically rejects it. If you have a preference for Percocet you may meet with resistance or even denial. Sorry can't fix that. I do work with my doctor and pharmacist to negotiate for myself. Lastly there is another thing to consider and that is addiction. I know we don't liketo think of this. If you have been on opiates for years and your tolerance is ever increaing your are medically addicted and your reasons are absolutely valid unless you are doc shopping or saying the magic words to get meds. I am interested in finding ways to decrease meds to zero. For many of you this may not be feasible. Best wishes for you all. Hope this is useful and not viewed as demeaning in any way.

I respect the opinions of doctors like you, but how many times have you actually taken this stuff? I think not very much, same with all the doctors and RNs who reply to these threads. You should listen to all of the people with actual experience taking these pills. There IS a difference. This many people can't be wrong.
