My 13 yr old son failed his eye exam in school when he was in 1st grade, we took him to the Eye Doctor and come to find out his vison in his right eye was 20/400, they told me he has scar tissue over his retina, said it possibly happened from some kind of infection, he was hospitalized when he was 6 yrs old for some kind of infection, the doctor told us the vial of blood leaked on way to lab, so we are not sure what he had, the eye doctor told us it would not get any better or worse, Ive got 3 different opinons with pretty much the same answer, Im jus wondering if anyone has ever heard of this and if so, what can I do? He has 20/20 in his left, the older he gets, the more I can look at him and see that his right eye looks lazy!! Other wise he is a very healthy 13 yr old, Thanks for ur input & help

Did you go to an actuall Ophtholmologist? There is a surgery to remove scar tissue which is called a Vitrectomy. But if your son is a candidate for this surgery would be up to the Doctor. Maybe there are not going to do the surgery until he is older. But I have seen similar surgery on a 14 year old student. Unfortunately the surgery did not improve his vision as much as it was anticipated.

I forgot, another possibility could be a PTK (Photo-Therapeutic Keratectomy). Usually covered by medical insurance.

Hi, my sympathies to you and family. I had an eye disorder, that was not discovered till I was 8 or so. By then, it was uncorrectable, as defined at the time, and still today, decades later. I was just informed by my eye doctor, that I will not be able to drive an automobile, within 10 years. Such is life. I have over 20/400 in one eye, so I identify. Also, I worked for a research eye facility many years ago. Generally, once a retinal or systemic eye disorder is discovered the best that can be done is simply to see that it does not get worse or progress to greater loss of visual acuity. Absolutely, see that he is seen by good opthamologists(esp. familiar with retinal disorders), and if they say such is the best that has been done. Well, such is life. I had two wonderful friends, both deceased that were legally blind. They taught me a great deal of hope and compassion on living in the day. He will need to have multiple corrective lenses for visual acuity, throughout his life. My best.
