I am scared that I am addicted to Lortab. I have had a spinal cord injury and in serious pain. I am prescribed 3 Lortab 7.5 a day, but end up taking 4 a day. I have been on and off pain meds since my injury in 2004, I have been taking 3.5 to 4 a day since July. I have never snorted a pill, I don't even take a whole pill at a time, I don't like the feeling they give me---just the pain relief. The 3 days in between my meds running out and getting refilled are terrible. I am so scared that I am addicted and so upset that I let myself get this way. I am young and a single mother. I have 7 pills left and 5 days before I can get a refill. I want to taper off and stay off, I do not want to be addicted! Any advice? I don't want my friends and family to know.

I have actually been in a similar situation to you!!

I (previously) took the beta-blocker Inderal for heart palpitations. I didn't ask for a refill in time and ended up with about ½ my normal dose for 2 days, and then one day without any at all!

I was terribly nervous, jittery, and afraid I was gonna die. I rationed it so I could make it through the day...

If you think you are ready to taper off this drug, you need to do it slowly. Get another refill in the meantime.

As you slowly cut down on the hydrocodone, you could start taking some non-narcotic painkillers (ibuprofen, tylenol) as needed.

Tapering off should be done over several weeks, not days. Best to talk to your doctor.

Remember, hydrocodone is an OPIATE - a class of drugs notorious for withdrawal and addiction. If you want to get off, you have to do it right. Slow and steady.

Since opiates work on the reward center in your brain, you could try eating some foods that stimulate the same area. Chocolate and cheese are a few just to mention. (YES - these foods do actually affect your brain chemistry!)

I wish you luck. Keep me updated!
