My relative has a people problem. He`s a true loner, avoiding relationships (never had a gf and his 20 years old) and have only 2 close friends. He doesn`t show much of emotions and likes to be all alone in his room. At first I thought that he was just asking for some attention in a weird way, but it`s not that at all. He works on computers and have no need to leave his room at all. He goes out only to go to the bathroom and sometimes during night to take a walk. His Mom thinks he has like schizoid personality disorder. Does anybody know anything about that?

Hi, yeah his symptoms are all clear. Weak interpersonal skills, difficulty expressing feelings, loner mentality, low sexual desire. But, you have to distinguish a person with schizoid personality disorder from avoidant. Schizoids prefer to be alone, but avoidants feel anxiety when surrounded by other people and have desire to fit in. Persons with schizoid personality disorder won`t seek the treatment on their own – his parents should seek for him. Child abuse could be the cause of his problem, but some people with schizoid personality disorder come from “good families”. The treatment depends on the personality characteristics associated with the disorder. A group therapy is often used for patients with schizoid personality disorder – it helps them to solve their social isolation problem. Also, people with schizoid personality disorder are sometimes on antipsychotic drugs in low doses, antidepressants and anti-anxiety meds. Some patients improve as they grow older.
