I was in a MVA (motor vehicle accident) this past Tuesday. When I got to the hospital, they asked me how I was feeling and I felt fine. I had some burns on my left knee and right wrist, but other than that I felt fine (airbag didn't go off... it didn't work). Just before they let me go, my right side started hurting pretty bad. I told the doc and they took chest x-rays. He came back in and said "No broken bones, take some Tylenol and call Primary if it doesn't get better."
I've been putting a large Ice Pack over the area for about an hour then returning it to the freezer, but the pain has been getting worse and worse. Tylenol doesn't do anything for me, so I called my Primary back on Friday and he said "Wait until Monday and then if you want to come in I'll see you then."
I didn't sleep at all last night and it took me 3 hours to try and straighten myself up and get out of bed this morning. I broke 3 vertebrae in MC accident 15 years ago and this is almost that bad. I can sit still in a chair and I'm in a bit of pain (maybe 2-3 on 1-10 scale), but as soon as I move an inch in one direction or the other: bleep bleepity bleep bleep bleep (9-11)!!! I have no outside visible signs of distress, but when I can't even turn to one side or the other, there's got to be a problem.
I'm contemplating going back to the ER (a different one)... my insurance covers ER visits 100%. but my primary care at 70%: that's one of the things wrong with healthcare in the USA but don't get me started on that! I can't be taking days off of work now and I need something other than Tylenol to get me to function...
If anyone has any experience with this, I'd like to hear your input.

Hi Morph,
It's actually very common to feel worse days AFTER a MVA.
Right when it happens your adrenaline is going and you're tense. As you start to relax and the adrenaline wears off, you feel pain.
If the pain is that severe go to the ER.
FYI, this might be covered by your automobile policy, especially if not your fault. Check with the agent.

Thanks Med-Dan.
I went to my primary today and he had me go to Radiology and they took 12 x-rays of my chest and ribs. I should get a call tomorrow to find out if I have fractured anything. Pain is still pretty bad. I cannot lay down and have been sleeping on the couch sitting up with the other cushions stacked alongside me to keep me from falling prone. I can't take any Advil or Aleve, etc because I have some kidney issues. i just hope I can get something to help me stay asleep. If I get 2 hours a night, I am lucky. My hospital stay used up my carpy auto insurance cap already, but thanks for the advice.

today is july 11th. i was in accident on the 3rd. I felt pain within seconds after getting out of my car. was at hospital getting xrays within 30 mins. 1-2 hrs after accident dr gave me 800mg of ibuprofen. i continued taking 800mg that i bought at the dollar store (4 pills) 3 times a day for three days and the pain was still there but did not get worse like all the drs & nurses said it would. still have trouble getting up and lifting things, etc. I also am getting hiccups frequently every day since accident and i think they are related to the accident cause i rarely ever get them and now i get them repeatedly every day. good luck to you and i hope this helps you. linda
