The pain is caused by the pressure the pillow puts pneumonia your ear cartilage, even talking on the phone for an extended period can cause pain. I got a piece of foam and cut it to about 6" x10" and cut a hole in the middle a little bigger than your ear. Put it in a pillow case and sleep with your ear in the hole. Pressure relived and no more pain. I did this about 15 years ago and as long as I sleep on myour ear pillow I'm fine. Try it it will work for you too.

My husband thinks I'm crazy. I just made him read other comments about this to make him believe me. Its been years that I've woken him up crying because both ears are excruciating. Gotta try the diy foam donuts. Definitely don't think anything major is wrong.

Same here my ears which ever one I've laid on that night,I'm a side sleeper.. And yes.. Poor circulation ( left leg) from a motorcycle wreck broke both bones in my leg, and shredded all the muscles, tendons, nerves, major reconstruction surgery ( broke my fibula and tibea).. 14 screws,6 inch plate, a full titanium rod from the knee down, this WS 8/23/14 then in 7/2015 had all the hardware removed except the titanium rod.. Then in November of 2015 found out I had cervical cancer.. So another surgery full hysterectomy 1/2016 I'm 31 now.. And this year I started noticing the ear pain, so I've got the poor circulation ( Dr said its neuropathy iny leg) and possibly hormonal imbalance ( thought it was good I'm on a good low dose estrogen patch) so, I have no clue..I been reading all these posts and am wondering what can it really be?? I haven't told the Dr yet, I hate telling them every little problem, they're gonna end up thinking I'm nuts, my husband says its probably all the meds I'm on and a imbalance in my chemicals cause of the medications.. Which that could be possible but I doubt it, I've been on the same meds for years now.. Ugh.. I don't know what to do

The same happens to me. Its happens when the pillow pushes you ear slightly upward. Its not an extreme manipulation but the pain can recreated by purposely pushing at the front, lower area where your earlobe is it cases narrowing inside the ear. It takes a while in this position but after a few hours like that it will begin to ache then cease shortly after returning ear to normal position.

Ears, nose and throat are one system so to just focus on ears is to miss other possible causes. In my case, over the counter steroid nasal spray works perfectly if used consistently. My ears get sore again when I slacken off.

I have the same pain. Its in the outside of my ear caused just by laying on my side pressing my ear in the pillow. There are pillows thet you can order online wich have a hole for the ear. But just try a smoother pillow. And when laying on your side, punch once into the pillow with your fist, so you ear rests deeper. It helps. I got the same problem on both sides, and this does help me trough the nights.

Just wonder if you have? I cup my ear in my hand for relief!

I believe the pill may have something to do with it. Mine didnt start hurting until after i was off of it. And im gonna get my hormone levels checked too. Also it hurts if any pressure is put against it like talking on the phone.

I have been suffering for the last 8 years on and off but a lot more frequently now, but I too have noticed my pains started at the same time as having my coil fitted. I'm thinking along the lines of it being connected.

I went to an ENT specialist just for this problem. He said it was the great auricular nerve that was causing it. Too much pressure on that side of the head. He said he only ever has seen it is someone who has had plastic surgery. I have never had that done before, so he was surprised. I feel you pain....it is awful. My only solution is to not lay on that side too much. I also think it may have something to do with hormones, but I am not sure what....
