I just had an MRI of my right elbow also. I was uncomfortable with how my arm was strapped into place. When the procedure was done as soon as they helped me to sit up the excruciating pain started which ran from my wrist to my shoulder I was unable to move my arm for at least 15 minutes as a result of the pain which was so intense that I could barely catch my breath. They offered no explanation and rushed me out the door.

I have had the same experience of almost unbearable pain. Perhaps the technician turned it on to high.

Not true on the ripping metal out of your body. And the "donut" scanner is a CT(computed tomography) aka "Cat Scan". The MRI that has a separate top and bottom half and is close to your face is an Open MRI. The MRI that looks like a donut but longer, or is deeper and more tube-like is a traditional closed MRI. There are newer MRI units that have a larger diameter bore which is also shorter from end to end and closely resemble a CT unit.

While I don't want to be disparaging to anyone searching for those with a common experience, PLEASE don't believe the "information" or "science" purposed by respondents on this forum. While I think the intention of most is for good, giving inaccurate information can be detrimental. DO your OWN RESEARCH no matter how "informed" the person state, or appears. Also, people suffering chronic pain can be on medication that may inhibit their ability to process and / or disseminate information incorrectly. So, it is only with the best intentions that I would point out there was some misinformation posted by johninsd188865. The most important is that MICROWAVES are NOT used in MRI's. This is NOT to discount anyone's pain experience. Just to clarify in an effort to help get to the cause of the pain experienced.

I had an MRI done on my right hip yesterday. I have had MRI's before and had no problem at all. I suffer with back pain and had a discetomy 4 years ago,I suffer with my hip and right leg and haven't had back pain for months just twinges. During the MRI the pain I had in my back and down my left leg was unbearable, the man had to come in and tell me not to move otherwise they wouldn't get a good picture and I would have to go back,I said i wasn't going back so had to lie rigid for the last 5 minutes. I was crying during the scan and when it finished I couldn't even get up they helped me into a wheelchair and I was sobbing like a baby. Today the day after the scan I can't move my back is really sore I have had to take more painkillers than usual. I said to the man I had had mri's before and had no problem,he just said he didn't know why I was like that. I didn't know this could happen during an MRI and have now looked it up on the Internet and it seems more common than what I thought. When I go to see my consultant I will be asking him why this happened to me and see what he says about it,I thought it might have been the vibrations from the noise the scan made going to the bit in my back which was sore and hitting a nerve which put the pain down my left leg,I am in agony today the day after the scan and will be for about a week now. I will deffinately dread the next MRI scan I have in the future, not a good experience this time

Yesterday I had an MRI for my left hand. The test also included contrast dye at the half way point of 1 hour 15 minutes. At 10 minutes, I was in so much pain that it was almost unbelievable. At 20 minutes, I had tears flowing out of the side of my eyes and I wasn't even trying to cry. Everytime the loud pulse sound hit, I felt as though every joint in my fingers, toes, shoulders, sides of hip, spine, and up my neck were hit hard. At 35 minutes I was removed from the tube so they could perform the I.V. for the contrast dye and they started the procedure again until done. When I finally came out of the tube at the end, I was tears were still streaming out of my eyes and I could barely move. The technician had to move my legs over the side and help me sit up because I literally could barely move--I was in so much pain! I felt sick to my stomach to the point of almost vomiting. I've had half hour MRIs in the past for my back twice and they were also very painful. I asked the technician why this happens and he acted surprised. He said I may be more sensitive to the magnetic wave system and should consider taking a strong pain medication before an MRI in the future. I told him that every pulse caused pain and he seemed perplexed. (Kaiser patient) 9/18/15 Roseville, CA

I had an MRI of my left knee for a torn meniscus, about a month ago. I'm a nurse on a sub acute rehab unit and have never had a patient say their MRI hurt. After about 4-5 minutes in the tube I was at an 8/10 and trying hard not to yell out. I'm no wimp when it comes to pain, but this was unlike anything I have ever experienced. There was too much artifact and they asked me to take my pain meds and come back the next day because I kept moving too much (which I had no idea I was doing). On valium and a high dose of Percocet, I finally made it through, but it still hurt quite a bit. Everyone from the tech to my surgeon couldn't explain why it would have hurt. It has not hurt like that again throughout the course of the injury, and it would subside between images. I can only assume it had to be the MRI, but no idea why.

I had an open ended MRI almost two weeks ago. My elbow will not stop hurting. I had contrast and it is in the same arm as the contrast needle. The doctor gave me a bag of ice and felt my arm up and down but gave no answer. I also had a stiff neck and for lack of a better word "mushy" bowels. I know all of this had to come from the MRI because I didn't have any of these issues before going. My MRI was of my womb and fibroids but now everything else is messed up.
