Well it seems that MRI's do hurt, at least some of us. I have a damaged shoulder and had an MRI last week. Wow the pain. I had to just put up with it as it was a 15 minute scan. Any longer and I'd have left. The sensation in my Arm and Shoulder reminds me of an operation I had when I was 12 years old. In the x-ray follow up to this operation the doctors injected me with dye to help the x-ray. The injection of this dye from a MONSTER syringe made my arm ache and throb so painfully. Similar to the throbbing pain of the MRI.. An opinion from an MRI Technologist as to the causes of his pain would be helpful. If we admit it happens then researchers can go about finding a solution hopefully.

Thanks for your post. This morning I had an MRI from my shoulders and up and I was feeling ok. Within 5 min I started to feel heat through my shoulders and neck then intense pain like someone squeezing my bones with pliers. But I was enduring it and praying because I really wanted to know what my diagnose was. Then when the scanning was done I told the technician and she said she's never heard of it and looked at me like I was crazy. I didn't want to cause a scene so I thought okay maybe just wait a while and it might past. 30min. later I had a follow up with my neurologist and he told me it triggered my pinched nerve in my Right shoulder and herniated disc L-5, But the funny thing is my left shoulder is in more pain then my right or anywhere else. Anyhow it's been 13 hours sense MRI, 2 500mg Tynenols, 1 800mg ibprophen, 1 ficoriet, 1 percocet later my bones are aching & I have a headache. Wow, I was going in to find out what's wrong with me instead came out with Unbelievable pain. I wish I was warned because I homeschool my kids and have my own company. I would have prepared for it, now it has set me back a day. I pray hopefully tomorrow's better. I encourage others who get a MRI ESPECIALLY for SHOULDERS be prepared and have someone drive you in case you run into this.

I have had several MRIs on my lower back. I have bulges in L4, L5, S1.. Spinal stenois. I just went for another one. I thought I couple of times I was going to have them stop because of the pain. Afterward, I had trouble getting up because of the pain. I had to stop walking leaving there because I had so much pain and felt like my back had a lot of pressure. I started crying. I have not had this happen during the mri like this before. I don't know if its because I am worse, or if it has to do with the nerves being so irritated. or laying in the machine for the 30 minutes

Just had mri on knee joint for possible torn acl. Experienced muscle spasms, tech had to repeat several scans for movement. Felt heat in leg, intense pain in joint felt like muscles were being pulled by magnet. Never experienced this before veteran of many MRI procedures.
Nice to know I wasn't imagining it.

Hello, This information is very incorrect. The MRI scanner uses radiowaves. I recommend reading this article for an overview: https://science.howstuffworks.com/mri.htm If you had pain during the MRI examination why didn't you stop the test? At times the TVMF (time-varying magnetic fields) can cause nerves in the body to fire and create muscle contraction. I have been a MRI technologist for 10 years and I have had patients complain of involuntary muscle twitching. Please educate yourself before spreading false information on MRI procedures. Many patients absolutely need the diagnostic information for their care.

I had a pelvic MRI yesterday. They said it was supposed to be 45 mins although I was in there a lot longer than that. It was more like well over an hour... maybe even 90mins judging by the time I arrived and time I left. I had a very bad spasm during the MRI test. I asked the technician if MRI's can trigger spasms and she said yes. Anyhow I had a rotten night and now still in a lot more pain than my usual. I also had my arms over my head all that time and I have bursitis with impingement in one shoulder and nerve pain in the other... so shoulders definitely not happy. My entire abdomen hurts. I'm guessing it's from lying flat on a metal table that long and having a hard board thing strapped to my stomach. Although I felt my insides shaking when that spasm was triggered... omg that hurt. When you can't move and you're in a lot of pain it's hard work. Well it looks like a lot of us suffered from this test. :(

Having damaged my shoulder as a result of a 10/12 foot fall from a ladder which broke, I've been trying to find out what was wrong and causing the pain and discomfort. Had an MRI scan in the week, which I thought would be the answer to a prayer, but after 5 minutes in the machine my shoulder was very uncomfortable, after 10 minutes unbearable, and after about 20 minutes I had to ask them to stop.

It seems that my minute movements during the scan, due to the discomfort, made the scan useless. It felt as though I was lying on the floor, with a car wheel resting on my shoulder. As others have observed, the discomfort has continued after the scan, and although 3 days have passed now, it's still worse than before the scan.

I was told by a straight faced Tech afterwards, that aborting scan due to pain & discomfort was reasonably common.

The pain is real, if you haven't felt it you don't know educate yourself. Just people put up with the pain because they know they need it. I have fibromyalgia and arthitis. When I remembered my nerve pain med before I was ok when I forgot it was torchure. Just know someone with nerve trouble may feel pain. It's your job to educate yourself. P.s.16 years in medical field and never stops doing continued education.

Hi, everyone! wow this thread has been going for a while and I'm so grateful to have stumbled upon it. Went to have an MRI last night which I've been waiting to get for almost 4 months. Finally the moment has come and I was nervous as well as excited to finally get some information on my C1-C3 pain. This pain has been with me for more than a year now affecting my shoulder and right arm. My experience was less than pleasant to put it lightly.

For the first 15 minutes I endured, I am 24 and incredible tough physically. I got through the pain at first by imagining myself bathed in violet white light and some Om ma Ni Pad me Om chanting. I know not everyone may understand but these visuals were all about trying to relax and feel protected to let the MRI continue. Finally had to ask to get out and described to the two ladies there that my entire body was hot and tingling! It honestly felt like the cells in my body were being ripped apart!! The ladies told me what many have been told before which is that, that does not happen and I must be claustrophobic. Which I have never been in my life. Proceeded to try two more rounds, they were trying to shove me out the door for the next person. Got all the way from my shoulder and they started on my neck were I proceed to tap out from the extreme pain which felt like my brain was splitting apart. After I came out I felt weak and dizzy and my neck was swollen and hot. Massive headache proceeded to ensue. Was again told I was claustrophobic and didn't know about it. Then was sent off with the advice of getting a sedative.

Question to the others experiencing the same issue!!! I need advice on whether to continue and try again or not. Honestly felt like to worse thing I have ever done in my life, but would it be worth it to push my body and find out what is going on with the neck? Just want opinions to gather my own because there is so little information on how this is effecting people! My neck is so nervy, I wonder if it my cause my disks and nerves permanent damage. Has anyone out there experienced stopping in the middle and going back for another one? Does anyone think a sedative would help with the pain? I have been reading this thread and have seen some people with months of recovery. I think with the neck being in such a delicate position that I will have to proceed smartly with my next choices. I do not have much time to decide whether or not to get other one though. The clock is always ticking I guess. Any advise from fellow humans would be GREATLY appreciated. thank you if you read this whole thing. and thank you to other people out there sharing. I thought I was alone. No one want to think that they are crazy or that their pain is imaginary and they tell you.
