My 11 y/o daughter is a rising sixth grader and is required to receive the Tdap vaccine prior to school starting. She had a well child check and received the Tdap and the vaccine to prevent meningitis in the left arm and Guardacil in the right arm. She complained of severe pain in both arms immediately and for the next two days. I just kept excusing it as normal reaction to shots till she began crying on the afternoon of the second day. She is normally a very tough girl. In fact she has her black belt in karate and is a 4 time state champion having won gold in each of her events at the state competition for the last 4 years. She also takes regular gymnastics classes. So to see her crying over a little pain from vaccines got my attention. I gave her Tylenol and then Advil and there was little to no improvement. I examined her arm and it was extremely swollen, red, and hot to the touch in the area of the vaccine that was raised and red. I checked her temperature and it was 101.F. Concerned I then felt that maybe she had some sort of allergic reaction. She is seriously allergic to seafood and shellfish. I gave her Benedryl and an ice pack to put on the affected area which seemed to give her some relief so I watched her and continued these till the afternoon of the third day. When it didn't seem to get better and she was now complaining of severe pain and her hand going to sleep. I proceeded to calling her doctors office and spoke to the on call nurse. The on call nurse advised me that my daughter should not have received the vaccines because one of them she believed contains a component that effects those who have a shellfish allergy, but I do not remember which one she had said. She advised me to take her to urgent care and gave me an address. I took her to that urgent care and the doctor there said that she has had an allergic reaction to one of the vaccines, but that she wasn't sure which one she would be allergic to. She gave her 60 ml of Presdnisalone and gave her for a prescription for 20 ml a day of the same. I called two hours later when it didn't seem to be getting much better to ask how long it should take till we see results. The nurse checked with the doctor and then told me that the doctor said it would take about 24 hours and to return to the urgent care or ER if it didn't get better or got worse. By the time the 24 hours were up she was much worse and I called her regular doctors office and spoke with the on call nurse who then scheduled us to return to them Monday morning (the next morning). Upon arrival to them they immediately diagnosed her with cellulitis (infection throughout the skin surrounding the area that she received her vaccines and running around and down her arm). The admitted her to the hospital for IV antibiotics to try and put a stop to this infection as soon as possible before it had a chance to make it into her bloodstream. They also consulted a surgeon to evaluate her for what I believe they said was compartment syndrome. She remained in the hospital overnight and received antibiotics around the clock through her IV. She was discharged with orders to take oral antibiotics every eight hours for the next 5 days. This is just the next day and she is now having fevers of anywhere from 99.5 to 101.3 F. Her swelling hasn't changed better or worse from yesterday. She has a followup appointment with her doctors office in the morning. I am now researching to see if there is any corralation between her allergy to seafood / shellfish and the vaccines that she received. Is there anyone out there that could shed some light on this very confusing issue? I am just concerned about what really happened and should she avoid these vaccines in the future?
