That sounds like a fungal nail infection. I had it and got treated with tablets which cleared it up. It does take months to treat but worth it.

I had for 20 years - finally diagnosed glomus tumour myself with help of internet and forums like this . I had been to doctor lots of times before and told probably arthritis or psychosomatic - like was imagining this excruciating pain !
When I went back to my doctor and asked if possible glomus tumour he agreed to send me to finger surgeon who immediately confirmed glomus tumour under finger nail bed. Happiest day of my life when finally had it removed with surgery

Exactly the same problem I have for the past two decades. On medical advice I applied candid solution to the nail but the pain continues. Sometimes I get shooting pain with in the bone of the finger.
