I have been going through the on and off rapid heart beats, jitters, nervousness and so on.  I something feel like I am going to pass out while driving.  What really helps me is turning on the music to draw my attention to something else and it worked.  I just had my annual physical and mentioned the rapid heart beats to my doctor and she prescribed medication (Venlafaxine) which I am not a fan of pills.  I did fill the prescription but read the side affects and threw them into the trash.  I tried drinking Green Tea to calm my nerves and it also works, but I wanted to get to a relaxed state on a continuous basis and take the stress out of my life.  I have notice if you learn how to breathe and relax it really does help.  I did some research of natural remedies and came across a website for Panic Away.  I ordered it an it confirmed what I already knew but give extra exercises and recommendations.  Please check them out and see if the techniques they offer would help you.   If offers a money back guarantee if you are not satisfied.  I also found this link and it also confirms the same findings.   ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** web addresses not allowed***

I have experienced the same symptoms all of you are sharing on this post. I was prescribed lexapro, which did help but eventually i got tired of the total emotional numbness. A few years ago a friend recommended a product called Mona-Vie. It's a fruit purée sold through network marketing. The first time I tried it for a week and it didn't do much for me. The second time, after my friend bugged me about it as most network marketing people do I decided to give it a month trial. After two weeks, I began to feel a difference. It was the first time in probably five years I could remember dreaming. I started sleeping solid and wake up early full of energy. I know to some this may seem like snake oil but when you reach the point of desperation you become open minded to trying anything.

Hi,

This is a common problem that I also suffer from. Firstly people suffering from these episodes are not suffering from some weird un-diagnosable disease.

Several causes may be present. The first one is sitting straight up in bed gasping for air. Generally this is caused by an actual inability to breath. This does not mean that you will suffocate though. The cause of this is post nasal drip. The nose produces to much mucus and it runs down the back of the throat. Ordinarily when standing it may not effect you. However when you sleep because your head is down the mucus sits in the back of your throat and causes a restriction of air flow coupled with the air passages relaxing as well compounds the problem. This then reduces the amount of oxygen in your body and you have to much carbon dioxide. The imbalance of carbon dioxide signals your brain to wake you up. Hence the sudden sit up gasping for air. I personally have even gotten straight out of bed and found myself standing. It's pretty scary. After this happens its may in some people, set off a panic attack which of course compounds the problem.

Some people have mentioned the shock part. I also worked out that the body at the point of just about falling asleep, may suddenly jar you out of falling asleep. The shock is quite a good way of explaining it and that is that the brain is relaxing the nervous system. The nerves have electrical impulses and it actually feels like you have been shocked by electricity. It's a bit like the brain is re-setting the nerves and is normal.

Ok how to fix it, first of all people that have a bit of stress in their lives will suffer from this, and need to relax their mind before sleeping. That means no electronic gadgets etc. Maybe read a book, an average one that is, because you don't want to keep reading if the book is good as that is counter productive. Secondly get a comfortable pillow that supports your neck and airway by keeping it open. Third focus on your breathing, ensure you are not taking shallow breaths. it takes a bit of practice and I can actually observe myself falling to sleep and know when the sleep point or unconsciousness is happening and ensure that I keep breathing deeply this works very well for me.

Also modern society makes demands on your time and your circadian rhythms. I always laugh when I read peoples posts saying they are not stressed. Truth is the vast majority of people in our modern society are so stressed and have been so for so long that we think it is normal. Not going to bed a regular times, big weekends partying, poor diet, starting the week tired and too much electronic interaction etc all takes it's toll and can cause this symptom. I know because when i watch what i am doing, don't make a habit of staying out late too often it all goes away and I sleep normally. when i abuse my body and mind it comes straight back again.

Hope this helps

I recently began having some of these symptoms and I agree with Janus. I find it that I tend to take shallow breaths, breathing with my chest rather than my belly, so I've been doing some belly breathing exercises. It has been helping me so far and I also have been reading quite often for leisure time and to help take my mind off of things, it seems to be one of the best remedies for a mindful/stressful state. Thank you Janus and others for the advices, I appreciate it.

hi eeryone. i think that some of this could be explained by endocrine disorders. I have a few tumors in my endocrine glands but it could be as minor as hormone disruptions. using plastics for hot foods or liquids could do this or anything with bpa. please be sure you get a doctor to listen to you.

Hi,Stress is the major role playing here.Do exercise or have a brisk walk early in the morning.Do yoga asana like breathing and stretching.Light headed is cause of extra load of neck and shoulder like travelling a long drive wearing helmet or over phone for longer time.Short breathing is cause majorly of gastric problem hence you may advice to have short meal in gaps and have fibrous food.Drink lot of water early in the morning empty stomach and flush the toxic.Im sure you wil rock again within 10-15 days if you stick to this lifestyle. If still persists, please consult a doctor.

I have had these symptoms and have found a cure for it.

Everything you guys are mentioning are symptoms of severe magnesium deficiency. Trust me, I just went through this stuff and I took a product that was power you mix in water and my issues with breathing, hard to swallow went away in minutes.

I also had gasping for air just at the point you would fall asleep. I thought I was going crazy. I also had racing thoughts when I tried to sleep, restless leg syndrome while sleeping and something weird. I noticed when I would just get ready to go to sleep, my hands would be in a fist instead of relaxed.

Calcium causes stress, magnesium relaxes.

Do some research and start reading up on this. 90 percent of people are low on magnesium which leads to high BP, diabetes, heart disease, adhd, autism and the list goes on and on and on.

I hope this helps some people here.

Warning though, if you have kidney disease or renal (kidney) issues, taking magnesium should be done with a doctors supervision as you can get hypermagnesia (too much magnesium) at which point you can die. If your kidneys are fine, there is nothing to worry about.

Also, for those of you who are going to run out and get a blood test from your doctor, you need to inform you doctor that a blood serum test is worthless and that you request a cellular level magnesium test. The body will do everything to keep your blood levels within range and this includes robbing it from your soft tissues, smooth muscles (arteries, bronchi ect) and bones (osteoporosis anyone?).

There are a few great books I bought after I figured out my problem so that I can avoid this c**p again. I am not 100 percent yet but I am a LOT better than I was a week ago. Magnesium OIL is by far the best way to go so you don't get the laxative effect of magnesium in the digestive track. (milk of magnesia for example is a laxative and so are all other forms of magnesium, some more than others depending on what it is chelated with)

God Bless and I hope some of you find this to be your problem.

BTW, YES anxiety has EVERYTHING TO DO WITH MAGNESIUM. Trust me, I was a basket case and didn't know why.

Hello Everyone,

As a Panic Attack sufferer for over 40 years, I can make a few suggestions that will help ease your symptoms:

1)  Do Not Eat after 6pm EVER!  You are inviting Acid Reflux in to your life, and your stomach needs to be empty by morning. When you go

to bed your body needs to work on deep breathing and weight loss, Not digesting the food you ate before bed, it causes Poor Sleep Quality

2)  Stop eating Spicey foods for dinner, only for lunch.  Your body can not finish the processing of the spices by the time you go to bed.

When you lye down to sleep the acid pushes in to your esophogus.  Eat a mild(not spicey), medium sized dinner before 6pm.

3)  Hydrate!!!  Drink 3-4 quarts of water durring the day, and a large glass before bed.

4)  Keep a regular(same time) sleep schedule every night, including your days off.

After 2 weeks you will see a major improvement, if not complete control over your symtpoms    :-P

If these symptoms started after moving into a new home, you may have exposure to mold inside your walls and ceiling. If you have been in a home for some time where mold is growing, it creeps up on you until you cannot function. Depending on your age, state of health, etc, is what your symptoms will reflect. Usually it does not affect men as much, unless they are ill. A child and animals will usually be the first to show mysterious symptoms. Hire an inspector immediately to do swab and/or air testing. And do it soon, it does not get better. I know, because I went into respiratory failure, and it killed my dog. But I could see nothing inside the home. I was a renter, and the landlord had fixed everything up to look really nice. Leaky roof, cracked foundation, rodent droppings, spontaneous coughing and sneezing, headaches. All possible signs. Please do it now, its not that expensive.
