I am 19 years old and am going for my first visit with the gyno next week. I am very nervous about the visit and about the whole exam! Can anyone put my mind at ease about it? Or if it is really going to be terrible, give it to me straight too! What are the side effects of gyno visits?

I don't think you have anything to be worried about as far as side effects go, but I think we are all nervous about visits to the gyno! It is never nice to have anyone touch your va-jay-jay with cold instruments. It is a lot better when they tell you exactly what they are doing while they are at it for me though, and ask them to heat the spatula before inserting it. Don't worry, you will be just fine.

It's normal to feel nervous. I go for my exam every year, and I still get nervous every time. I find it extremely uncomfortable, but it's temporary. It doesn't take very long and then it's done! As for side effects, I wouldn't worry about that. I've never heard or known anyone that had side effects from a pelvic exam.
