I saw some news articles about potential side effects of mumps in boys recently. The articles I read also mentioned the vaccination rates are going down, which is causing more outbreaks of the mumps in turn. Does mumps really cause infertility and other problems in boys, and what are the statistics on this?

You are very curious as I am so I have found out that some complications of mumps are possible but rare. In men these complications include: orchistis which is an inflammatory condition that causes swelling of one or both testicles and sometimes leads to sterility. Meningitis is one more complication of mumps and can be life threatening.
Encephalitis which is inflammation of the brain caused by mumps but can be life threatening.

If you have some more information which I don’t please share with me. And considering the vaccination if you are planning to do it consult with your doctor because maybe you have immunity for mumps and there is no need to be vaccinated at all. And this would be good although for most of the people there are no side effects it is possible to experience some of them.

If it were me, Id be a "big picture" person and a good sport and have my kid vaccinated. If you don't, you are piggybacking on all the families who did get the vaccination. The reason we have outbreaks of measles and other diseases that "had been beaten decades ago" is because so many people decided to piggyback on all the "suckers" who did get the vaccinations.
